A Sim is constructed by a developer through data population of a number of data files; these modules then feed into core-code which uses the data to compile the sim correctly. Each file can recognise a number of KEYs preset against which data is written. For example the X and Y co-ordinates of a signal, or point, the length of a track circuit, speeds and so on. We have an editor which can ease the process and in some cases automate some of the data entry.

Different developers will have thei…

How do I become a developer?

First rule: please don't ask to become one. Developers have been picked by their knowledge of the subject which can be picked up from their forum postings. They can also be recommended but again proof of knowledge would be required. As we're a small band of developers, the ti…

Are mutually exclusive

This feature is for use in timetable writing and creates a full set of NotIf rules for any number of given trains. The user of the timetable will simply see a list of NotIf rules.

For example: 1A00 and 1A01 are to be mutually exclusive. The feature will create 1A00 Notif 1A01 and 1A01 Notif 1A00. Similarly for 3 mutually exclusive trains you will get the full set of 6 Notif rules etc etc.

Further explanation can be found in the timetable writing instructions.

Line Blocking

Some simulations, normally where there is an alternative entry point i.e. 4 track main line, can be set to allow lines to be blocked for train entry. This is in addition to any pre-coded closure scenarios.

There are several ways the developer can set these up to work and you will be advised in the manual which has been adopted. These options are:

Swindon A and B

Swindon is on the high speed line from Paddington to Bristol, South Wales, and the Cotswolds. Originally SimSig Swindon covered the entire area that Swindon covers - some 60 route miles - and a separate Swindon B sim (more commonly called Didcot) covered the Didcot area. In 2008 in conjunction with the introduction of the Scrolly SimSig the decision was taken to combine the two Swindon Sims into one.

A Q berth is a berth that looks like any other but is set to display the contents of more that one hidden berth. Which hidden berth it displays at any given time is subject to a set of rules of precedent set by the developer.

There are many reasons why this may be the case, for instance a displayed TC may in reality consist of several mini-TCs combined into one and a Berth is given to each of these mini-TCs. E.g. the hidden berth maybe associated with a Repeater or shunt signal which shares a …

This SimSig simulation covers a large geographical area between Glasgow (Queen Street), Polmont and Dunblane. The sim notionally represents the area and signalling as at November 2007 when I visited all the boxes (Larbert Jn had closed a few weeks before and was not visited). However, there are some variations and inconsistencies; e.g. Cowlairs carriage sidings closed some years ago and an option to have the Stirling to Kincardine line which was not (re)opened un…

Overview

Edinburgh simulation is one of the largest SimSigs created and started development as two sims covering 10 screens in January 2007; fortunately SimSig scrolly came along.

The simulation in the main represents the post-electrification layout between 1990 and 2006. Due to the complexity of the changes the ability to also provide the 2007 onwards layout is too difficult at the moment. The possibility of a pre 1990 layout option was explored and although I had a track layout insufficie…

Phone Calls

Yards

A number of yards require you to phone ahead to advise of a train’s approach. There is no rule or time limit on how early you make the call but if you do not then you will incur a penalty in most cases.

The yards are:

	* Thornton
	* Oxwellmains Cement {not implemented in initial release}

Mechanical box operation

The SimSig IECC platform was not designed with mechanical signalling in mind, nevertheless it has been possible to create the essential characteristics of their operation. It should be accepted that this is just a representation and it is acknowledged that there are alternative ways it could have been done.
Sections of lines that are not track circuited are shown as hollow track- you will only be able to follow the progress of the train by watching the TD or F2 menu …

Official Meets

Official meets are arranged currently three times a year, roughly mid-March, mid-July, and mid-November, each on a Saturday. The venues for these are usually pub function rooms, with those pubs being in places with easy transportation links. The July meets are in London, the November ones are in Derby. However, the March meet “floats” around the country - we've had Bristol, York, and Peterborough so far. Meets involve numerous laptops networked together around the room and usuall…
