Southampton is an area with lots of yards and freight terminals serving the maritime industry that Southampton is famous for. Not only that, but frequent commuter trains to and from London, local services, and long distance Cross Country trains converge on the junctions.

Because of long signal sections on the Fareham (Netley lines) and Romsey branches, you have to plan carefully to ensure that fast trains aren't stuck behind stoppers.

Not only that, but some of the freight trains may be too long for the loops, therefore restricting the number of locations where they can be sidelined for other trains to pass. Most of the freight in the area either originates or terminates on your patch; there is not much through freight.
