I hope no-one minds me throwing this photo in too. In this photo we have a Cross Country train passing a signal that, as far as I know, is rarely lit for the direction indicated.

1. Where did I take this picture?
2. Why was the signal showing the direction indicated?

(Note: for part 2, simply putting: "because a train was going that way" isn't what I hope for as that is obvious!)

Nope, I don't think anyone would mind, as this is exactly the sort of thing this thread is intended for.

1: Lawrence Hill, Bristol. Photo shows Signal 252, therefore is looking towards Dr Day's Junction.

2: I'd be tempted to say something like because the signaller wants to light up that feather (Position 1(?)), but I guess it's lit up because the train is, at a guess, going towards North Somerset Junction, although I'm not sure if saying that counts as saying ""because a train was going that way"".

Is the right answer. I didn't think it would prove too difficult but decided to try it anyway.

Same meaning, different words. To put it another way, something was necessitating more trains being sent that way than usual on Monday. But what? If no-one gets this by the time I get home from work on Tuesday I will post the answer to this part.

For question 2 I would suggest the emergency absolute possession of the up and down Badminton lines in the Hullavington area due to the water levels being in contravention of rule book module M4 clause 1.1 for permitted traffic running when excessive water is in or around the 4ft was resulting in diversions of the 1Axx's coming via the Severn Tunnel via Bath Spa.

If I'm honest, I'm not totally and utterly au fait with the rail network in that part of the country, but I am aware that on Monday there was flooding between Tiverton Parkway and Exeter St Davids causing problems. Could that have had something to do with it?

To clarify right now, I did not see DriverCurran's post before submitting mine

There has been quite a bit of disruption to the services in Devon and Somerset recently. There was an Obstruction on the line at Totnes a couple of days ago and yesterday we had flooding on the Exeter-Newton section, Exeter-Tiverton section and Swindon-Bristol Parkway. I believe the Swindon one was more severe.

I think position 1 reads to the Down Filton Main, position 2 to the Up Bristol Loop (or the Rhubarb as we called it in the panel) and position 3 to the Down Bristol Loop.

Posttion 1 is very common, 3 fairly common and 2 almost never unless you are sending something round the Marsh.

The diversion of London Paddington - South Wales trains via. Lawrence Hill, Bath Spa & Chippenham was indeed the cause. The diversion was due to flooding in the Chipping Sodbury tunnel. Trains called additionally at Patchway where passengers for Bristol Parkway were put onto coaches.
