TOPIC: Temple Meads 80's layout.....

Temple Meads 80's layout..... 05 Mar 2012 18:53 #1

Evening,

With regards to the platform numbers nowadays at Bristol TM, where they the same back in the 1980s?

I only ask as I have a full-set of platform books (1985 Summer) for Temple Meads & it shows services departing from Platform 13. Now looking at the 80s layout on the sim, I cannot locate a platform 13. So am a little curious as to how the platform layout the, relates to the platform layout now.

Any info appreciated.

The 1970s resignalling doesn't show 13,

signallingnotices.org.uk/notices_detail....n_id=49&swaps=&coll=

---

Actually, signallingnotices.org.uk/notices_detail...._id=183&swaps=&coll= shows that they didn't add 13 and 15 until 2001...

Wikipedia however, shows that 13 was the west end of the Arrival platform, with 14/15 being the East/West end of the Departure platform.

The platforms at Temple Meads were renumbered in 1965, following the closure of Brunel's original terminal platforms. Essentially, the numbering was reversed from one side to the other, viz:

Current platform 1 used to be platform 12 (the east end of the old "arrival" platform)
Current platform 2 used to be platform 11 (the west end bay)
Current platform 3 used to be platform 9
Current platform 4 used to be platform 10
Current platform 5 used to be platform 7
Current platforms 6 used to be platform 8
Current platforms 7 and 8 used to be platform 8
Current platforms 9 and 10 used to be platform 5
Current platform 11 used to be platform 4
Current platform 12 used to be platform 3
Current platform 13 used to be platform 2
Current platform 15 used to be platform 1

Of the remaining original platforms, the old platforms 13 to 15 were part of Brunel's original shed, being the west end of the "arrival" platform, and the east and west ends of the "departure" platform respectively.

Hopefully that's cleared up any confusion ...

There wasn't a platform 13 there in the 80s, although there was back in the 60s! The original layout at Temple Meads (i.e prior to the resignalling of the early 70s and the Beeching cuts) had 15 platforms, but numbered the opposite way round (number 1 and 2 were on the southern side - what are now 13 & 15), with the highest numbers (12-15) allocated to the two long platforms in the original Brunel GWR train shed on the northern side. Those were all taken out of use (apart from platform 12, which survived as the new east end bay platform 1) after the old Bristol & Gloucester route via Fishponds & Mangotsfield lost its stopping passenger service in 1965. The modern day Bristol PSB now stands on the old platform 14 site. The remainder were numbered 1-12 from north to south, but with split numbering that can be seen in the sim; the former 1 & 2 on the south side were used for parcels traffic only from that point on until 2001, when they were reinstated for passenger use and numbered as 13 & 15.

Thanks for all the replies and information, just thought I would include from the M-F book, those trains booked to use "Platform 13"....

5A11 EHST 04+59 HSTD-Taunton (for 0635 Taunton-Paddington)
5A08 EHST 05+25 HSTD-WSM (for 0625 WSM-Paddington)
5A23 EHST 08+50 HSTD-BTM (for 0920 BTM-Paddington)
3A03 13:15 to Paddington (Premium Parcels)
1E21 14:15 Plymouth-Leeds P.D. (Postal)
3B07 15:50 Paddington-Swansea (Premium Parcels)
1A08 20:37 to Paddington (Premium Parcels)
1V95 15:38 Leeds P.D.-Plymouth (Postal)

Based on the above I would have thought it *could* have been the Parcels Platform which is simulated on the 80's layout, but the presence of 5A23 to form
1A23 0920 BTM-Paddington HST put a kybosh on that, unless, as H&S was not an over-riding factor back then, the parcels platform was permitted for passenger usage?

to add to this, my 1993 swb for sunday, indicates only one train, an EHST which comes in to 13 for water and cleaning at 2209 and then departs ECS MO to hereford,
all the other pax use 11 and 12, but not 13,

possibly a typo in the SWB (rare for them to be wrong)

hope this helps

In the Oct 1984 - May 1985 Bristol Temple Meads arrival & departure book there are only 4 trains shown to use P.13. These are:-

1E21 1415 Postal Plymouth - Leeds P.D. arr. 1722/dep. 1742
3B07 1550 SX Premium Parcels London Paddington - Swansea arr. 1929/dep. 1948
3A08 2037 SX Premium Parceks Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington, vans detached off 3B07
1V23 SX Postal Leeds P.D. - Plymouth arr. 2144/dep. 2210

Those are the only trains in this SWB that are booked to use P.13, so it would seem that this platform serves as a 'Parcels Platform' during the period this SWB covers which maybe the one before yours Dibbs.
