This could've gone in any number of categories... mods feel free to shift it if you think it would be better elsewhere.

Going to St Albans yesterday I noticed a facing crossover in the slow lines north of West Hampstead; looks like WH222 has had a position 4 feather added. I'm just wondering if this is to give a higher-speed replacement for Cricklewood South Junction? The present layout (20mph I believe?) imposes quite a penalty when trains have to be turned in or out (as was happening yesterday).

If not, does anyone know what is being done there?

Yes, since at least 2011 (!) you can go up the slow, through platform 2 at West Hampstead (ie Down Slow), and back to the Up Slow. Useful as a turnback facility, of course. Maybe other works since then too.

Shows how wide awake I've been when travelling that way (or perhaps it's just that I've usually been on the slow so less able to see what's happening).

Has been there for a while now. Mainly used for up slow trains to terminate at West Hampstead then go back north when T3 south of the station. Interesting moves there a couple of Sundays ago when the slows were blocked north of West Hampstead. Hull trains routed from Upper Holloway into P2 at West Hampstead then reversed to St.Pancras high level (WH822 south end of P2). They left St.Pancras, back to P2 West Hampstead then back on the up to Upper Holloway.
