At this stage in time I can probably tell this tale without any repercussions. Shortly after the Cl.91s were cleared for use over the whole ECML to the Waverley there was a problem with the Res Cl. 90 due to power 1S04 15:33 Kings Cross - Edinburgh mail. The powers-that-be decided to swap a Cl.91 onto 1S04 and use the Cl.90 vice a Cl. 91 on a passenger service to Edinburgh later in the day. The Cl.91 must have come off a set in reverse formation as it was blunt-end-first at the front of 1S04. My work took me to York to check on some of the mail traffic on the train and then due to go home to Newcastle on a passenger service. Having seen what I needed to see with the mail I went up to the front to see the Cl.91 along with some York station postal staff. We got chatting to the Res driver (known to the postal staff as he was on their services on a regular basis). He found out where I was going and because of my obvious interest asked if I wanted to ride with him rather than going home passenger. I don't need to tell you my answer. By the time we left York, the blunt-end cab had a Res driver, a BR passenger driver (think it was pre-GNER) as pilot because the Res man was not passed on a Cl. 91, a travelling inspector and myself. Just a little cramped!

Not quite working a freight, but working a Res Class 1 mail blunt-end first.

Great link. Thanks very much. Also indicates that both 58050 and Clive are correct. The Cl. 43 surrogate DVTs were originally not powered up but later in the piece they were fully powered up giving 8000hp on tap.

I have an idea (source almost certainly Modern Railways) they slightly altered the cl91 software so the power delivery/speed profile matched that of an HST power car. As others have said, those sets went like the proverbial. Fun while it lasted...

No doubt the new civil-servant specified bi-modals for the ECML will be equally lively?

They do occasionally work blunt-end- usually when there's some kind of fault with the DVT. Leads to the equally unusual sight of an exposed mark 4 carriage end.
