Playing a solo sim with the default TT and matching era but haven't had a single train enter through Basford Hall Up Arrival No 1. I note the manual states "Trains entering from Basford Hall Yard will enter on the Up Departure No.2 line" but it also indicates that anything sent through Up Arrival 1 should re-appear on Up Departure No 1, but this isn't happening - presumably they head to No 2 rather than disappearing but I haven't made notes. Is this expected behaviour?
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

I'm using rough locations here as I don't have a TT in front of me

If a train is timed at CSSN -> Basford Hall Jn and is sent via the yard, it will appear on the line it went in on at the other end. In your case, sending in via Arrival 1 will make the train come out on Departure 1. If a train is timed CSSN -> Basford Hall Yard, it will leave the sim, and the new service if it continues will enter on Up Departure 2

I've been through my messages and haven't had a single entry from No.1 all day although I don't think I've diverted through trains via the yard so that could be the reason, presumably everything booked onto Arrival 1 with no onward workings terminate which is why everything appears on 2.

You won't get an entry on these trains as they'll be timetabled to remain in the sim.

Yes, that's correct about the last timetabled location. My assumption is that a train would most likely within the yard pull onto the Up Departure No.2 line, and reverse back into the fan of sidings. There are some crossovers that will allow this, but none that will allow a train to go from the fan of sidings to any of the other departure lines.
