I'm not sure if someone has already asked this, but now that we have such web sites as Open Train Times, would it be possible for someone involved with Simsig who has comprehensive programming knowledge of both how Simsig works and how to write an app that could export the relevant data from the Open Train Times web site for a given section of the rail network and stream it into the appropriate Simsig Sim so that you could have say with the Marylebone Sim, a "real time" feed into Simsig of *real* trains in *real* time as it were. It would mean as you can with Flightradar24, you could track a *real* train journey in Simsig.

Or would this tread on too many legal toes?

Just a thought. And yes, I know, I have too much time on my hands!

OpenTrainTimes (and many other websites) are just taking information from the Network Rail Data Feeds that are available to all. If someone could interpret the information from the data feed then it *might* be possible to populate a SimSig simulation with live running Train Descriptions directly, without having to go via someone else's website.

Remember you can also get the same information (not all) as the Network Rail live data feeds out of a simulation using the information gateway.

I made a very clunky mockup of a live TD map of Dee Marsh Junction that could be connected into the sim as proof of concept.

"Passengers for New Lane, should be seated in the rear coach of the train " - Opinions are my own and not those of my employer

But impossible due to the direction of time.

You can do that already.

You can only get the WTT stuff that's already in the CIF, and perhaps STPs depending on when you look.

Which seems to me what he was asking for; clearly you can't always foresee cancellations and the like.

I've just rediscovered SimSig and also discovered the OpenTrainTimes maps - a very neat application of open data! I've been using RTT for a few years, though.

I had a similar thought to OOS, but with a slight twist: what if SimSig could 'stream' live data at the fringes of a sim, so that you're working with the live timetable as you're playing? Obviously, once a train has arrived in your panel it's under your control, so the live data is useless from that point. Maybe a separate app could emulate a neighbouring SimSig sim, feeding it live data from Network Rail instead of an actual simulation?

I suppose you'd also need a function to download the WTT when you start playing the sim too, so you have a timetable to work with. This would be quite a useful function on its own, to quickly generate SimSig timetables from the open data. Has anyone done something like this?

Would it also be possible to get live data on faults? I'm not sure if that's available from Network Rail.

PS: Apologies in advance if I shouldn't have resurrected a two-year-old thread. It seemed relevant, but I'm happy to create a new thread if that's what I should do. I couldn't find any rules governing this?

Forum Rule 10
10) Bumping: Don’t post to an old topic simply for the purpose of keeping it alive. But if you have something useful to add then it is preferable to add to an existing topic (no matter how old) than start the same or similar topic again.

Thanks Peter. In that case, I hope my post is seen as "something useful to add" - I certainly wasn't just trying to bump this thread.
