Hello

Between both, what's the overall best? Price to quality, easiness (i want something not too easy but not too hard). I've heard Edinburgh is the largest map, but is it hard?

This will be my first payware so don't want to get overwhelmed with difficultness (?)

Would you recommend either of those or one specifically? I'm also open to other suggestions. I don't care about the location nor which classes travel there. I want something somewhat fast-paced (if possible)

Kind regards,
Pedro

Hi mate I do not know the Portsmouth Sim , But Edinburgh is huge. It is also well out of date, Waverley has been remodelled and there are new lines and services. Even as is it takes a huge amount of work. I would try the likes of York or Newcastle, they are crackers.

Portsmouth is a small area, however it is reasonably busy with conflicting movements and a level crossing to monitor. I'd say its a comfortable single player sim with a decent challenge when delays and failures are on.

Edinburgh is massive but does have ARS to assist. Personally I'm not a fan of solo play as even with ARS I still struggle to keep track of everything that's going on, especially with delays on.

York is 30 euros, for my first payware I wanted something 10-20 MAX. Thank you for the suggestion but I think it's too early to spend 30 euros on York.
I'll do a bit more search on Portsmouth, thank you.

I know that Portsmouth is small, from your experience is it complex or simple? I'm still fairly new so don't want to get dropped into a shark tank.

All the Payware sims have a short demo period, and can be downloaded into your loader without you paying for them first. Try before you buy and see if you like them

I have both the Horsham and Dorking and the Portsmouth sims which I think were the first two that I purchased. They both cost £10.00 which is well within your budget. Both are manageable for a beginner like yourself. As others have suggested, try the demo modes to see how you get on.

I also have the Edinburgh, Newcastle and York sims mentioned above, but to be honest, I think that they would be quite a challenge for a beginner.

Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate.

Portsmouth is small but intensive and some critical junctions to monitor, it's easy to pull off right through and then realise something waits {without timetabling} for the opposing route.
Portsmouth can be easy to lock yourself up, with many long trains heading towards a small terminus. You've also got Fratton depot to contend with.

Yeah personally I think Portsmouth would be perfect for a relative beginner wanting a slightly more challenging single player sim. You can always play with failures off to get the hang of the layout for a few hours' of game time before cranking them up to whichever difficulty suits you. To keep track of there is one level crossing, a busy flat triangular junction, a single lead into Portsmouth & Southsea Low Level which can cause conflicts, a busy terminus which really could do with more platforms, and a depot. Not a walk in the park but certainly should be manageable for one person.

Bear in mind that neither Portsmouth nor Edinburgh simulate the current situations at those stations; Porstmouth is based on Portsmouth PSB which closed a while back with a resignalling project that caused control to move to Havant, and Edinburgh (though I believe still signalled from the same place; someone correct me if my memory has failed me here) has had substantial layout changes, especially with regards to disused platforms being brought back into use.

Having said that I would be surprised if current WTTs can't be made to work on Portsmouth (perhaps with some minor modifications); I believe the changes are mostly with regards to enabling more bidirectional running. I think trains can also turn back at Fratton now which they couldn't before, and that facility is being used during the current emergency timetable (but doesn't seem to be used in the ordinary WTT).

Have a look at Feltham, its busy enough for a solo player but compact enough not to be overwhelmed.
