...feeling a bit lost and overwhelmed. Had a quick look at the Wiki but there doesn't seem to be a simplified line diagram just showing the overall map of the area modelled, so I had to resort to having Open Street Map in another window and tabbing between.

Fell at the first hurdle as despite reading the instructions, I could not set the route towards the GF at Moss Vale to get the ECS in the Yard. Think I may have routed another train into the adjacent section which has locked the main to main crossover.

Definitely think I'm going to have a run over this in FS2020, might help familiarise the locations!

However it's a magnificent piece of work and hopefully once up to speed can have a bit of fun with it.

One thing to note is that due to a bug with how random shunt movements are currently implemented, it's best to keep the sim open as long as possible, i.e. don't close it down and resume from a save file later on, instead just pause the sim and put your computer on standby/hibernation. (Of course you're out of luck if Windows decides it just must update right now because you've been putting off updates for long enough)
Otherwise, you'll be missing some of the random shunts/trip workings in the Yass/Cootamundra/Stockinbingal area, because they're only scheduled to run every few hours and reloading a saved simulation currently always resets that timer back to zero.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Well I normally only play for an hour or so at a time and don't think leaving the PC in standby mode is really an option, certainly not overnight!

Am I correct in thinking this territory goes against the established "logic" of running west to east/south to north from right to left across the panel with trains from the Sydney direction heading west/south entering from the LHS of the screen? No worries, I'm sure I will get used to it but it does kind of make you feel a bit left handed, especially when you have a map open to have an overview of the geography.

I can't answer for this one, but panels in the UK don't tend to have a single rule. On the ECML and environs, King's Cross has south on the right, Peterborough (and also Cambridge, for that matter), has south on the left, and Doncaster has it on the right again.

In the case of Cambridge and Peterborough, north on the panel is on the north side of the box. The panel is on the side away from the track, so you face the panel with north to the right, turn round to look out of the window, and north is on your left. I can't remember what the box layout is for the other two.

I wouldn't say there was a convention at all. Rough count, pre-TVSC, half of the boxes from Paddington (Slough New/Old Oak) to Penzance and Swansea had London on the left; the other half on the right. London Bridge and Victoria ASCs had London on the left end of some panels and the right end of other panels. WMSC and Wembley have London to the right; Rugby SCC/ROC to the left. And so on.

As for Australia, same again. Sydney (though being a part through station) effectively had Sydney to the left, whereas the next boxes along both had Sydney to the right, and I think at least one box after that flips again. Since Sydney and Strathfield closed it's changed - I'll let the Aussies chime in here as I can't remember what it's now like.

I'm sure my old brain will figure it out (eventually). I'll need to design a schematic map that reads left to right, too!

Well indeed, but the point of "London is always [left|right]" certainly didn't hold true there.

I always thought Slough New and Swindon B were very odd. View 1 was the westmost overview, View 2 the eastmost overview - okay so far - but the detail views were 3 for the eastmost and 7-8 for the westmost!

Simsigs Strathfield panel has Redfern (Sydney)on the Right to Strathfield on the Left.(East to West).
Moss Vale displays Picton (Sydney) Left to Cootamundra on the Right. (North to South).

'Sydney on the left' is the current standard for computer panels in New South Wales. Older signal boxes had the track diagram oriented the same way the signallers were sitting, so it depends on which side of the line the box was built.

Strathfield Signal Box as represented in SimSig has Sydney on the right. When the box closed and was converted to computer panels in 2017, the track layout was flipped upside down to meet the new standard. Definitely a struggle to get used to!

Moss Vale sim has Sydney on the left, and if you like, Melbourne on the right. The Main South line connects these two capital cities.

On a helpful note I found this site... https://www.sa-trackandsignal.net/#diagrams If you go to ARTC NSW DIN & HVN you can highlight the Main South and click on it to bring up the Sectional Appendix (works best in Chrome not IE) as a PDF. Page 1 is a schematic overview of the lines and locations. Sorted! I won't reproduce the map here as there may be copyright implications.

Happy to report... Game on, got the train in the sidings at Mossy without issue. I do like the GF operation.

Think the secret of this one is not to pull off too far ahead, treat it like the SIAM US sims or when doing your despatching in Run 8.
