Hi this is my first post in this forum. I am trying to get into SimSig (not easy, being an Aussie) and downloaded Royston as this was recommended for beginners. I've started playing it but am a bit confused about the "Tutorial Timetable".

When I installed Royston it came with only one timetable, Royston 2003.WTT, dated 31/10/2005. The scenario options are Perfect/Beginner/Standard/Difficult. There is no "Tutorial" option here. Under the "Timetable" section the only one available is Royston 2003. There is no "Tutorial" timetable.

In the SimSig > Simulations > Timetables > Royston section of this forum is a thread "Royston Tutorial TT (Part 1)" by postal saying

No link to a tutorial appears on this post. However, by sheer luck I stumbled across a link to a Royston tutorial here which appears to be the tutorial mentioned. Unhappily, Part 2 has not eventuated. However, there is no mention of a distinct "Tutorial timetable".

Has anybody produced such a timetable with associated detailed notes? If so, this would be very useful.

Hi maxand, welcome to the forum.

If I've understood your post correctly then these links may help you.

You can view the available timetables for Royston here.

You can download the Royston Tutorial Timetable here.

You can download the Royston Tutorial timetable (Part 1) here.

Not the only Aussie - not one myself but I am aware of a number of other Aussies on here. Assuming you have no objections - will let them know about you and who knows maybe they can help you out in some way.

Hope this helps.

Thanks UKTrainMan for those helpful links.

On following them, it turns out that there are TWO downloadable tutorial files, one named Royston_Tutorial_V1_0.zip [file contents dated 13/10/2009] and the other named Royston+Tutorial+V1.0.zip [file contents dated 28/05/2009]. I chose to use the former as, being more recent, it was likely to have fewer bugs. The zip files each contained only a .wtt and a .wtr file, with no explanation of what to do with them. We are obviously expected to know to copy them into the Royston subdirectory of the SimSig installation folder in Program Files.

Having done that and selected the Tutorial timetable, the course of events doesn't match the advice given in postal's tutorial page. The first train mentioned in the tutorial is 5R96, whereas the first train that appears in Royston_Tutorial v1.0 is 5C07. The novice is not given any information about what it is, where it's going or what to do about it. Some tutorial. Maybe I overlooked some other file.

Ditto for the next two trains, 5C08 and 1C13. I will keep playing in the hope that instructions and not error messages start appearing out of nowhere.

IMHO the most important advice to a beginner, that should appear at the top of any tutorial, is In Options > Display, check Windowed Mode. This forces SimSig to run in its own window instead of fullscreen, enabling you to access help pages, signalling diagrams, etc. while playing the sim.

I had been a beginner, but I managed to get to SimSig by reading the Wiki and playing Royston with the standard Timetable 0600
I've never tried the tutorial timetable but it seems that the standard one is already quite simple.

You can try that also.

I also had a video handling the first train (it's 5R96)
It has no sound and I seem to have done something stupid (setting routes too late and using a speed that is too fast for beginner...)
You can still try to have it as a reference though.

Thanks alvinhochun for the helpful video. Yes, YouTube seems the way to go here.
I'm sure I'll get there in the end by trying a few other sims and reading the comments. Much appreciated.
I may have a go at creating a YouTube video myself after I get the hang of it.
