The majority of loco hauled traffic over the North Wales Coast would be worked byCl.47, Cl.46, Cl.45, Cl.40, Cl.25 & Cl.24s with the odd appearance of pairs of Cl.20s. The MGR trains out of Point of Ayr Colliery were Cl.47 hauled with 30 HAAs on the Fiddlers Ferry services acoording to my 1977 freight trains loads book. Cl.47s, Cl.46, Cl.45 & Cl.40s would be used on freightliner workings to & from Holyhead freightliner terminal. I can tell you the loadings & number of wagons.

I'm considering moving forwards to 1977 - seeing as both the carriage working and freight working book for those years is available. 77 also seems to have more freight running - the Point of Ayr MGR trains aren't around in 76, and some traffic that was tripped to/from Mold Jcn (or is missing from the WTT somehow) appears as separate trains - for example, the 1976 SX Sandhills/Manchester Hope St - Mold Jcn ballast empties continue all the way to Penmaenmawr as separate trains in 1977.

Were 37s used much on the NWC at this period, or did they only start appearing later once the peaks started to disappear?

Also, does that freight working book give details of parcels trains?

in 77 the peaks hadnt really started to appear! they came on a few TP services (newcastle - Llandudno for instance) but werent exactly commonplace until the early 80s. 47s were far more common.

Parcels and mail is dealt with by a separate document.

37/4s didnt appear en masse until circa 93 to replace displaced 158s and 156s, i dont beleive they became commonplace until the late 80s early 90s on manchester - llan/holyhead loco hauleds, but shared these turns with 47s 31s and 20s. they replaced the 25s and 40s on ballast and departmental turns when they were withdrawn aswell. the peaks were replaced by 47s really

Peaks(Cl.45s) only started working on the North Wales Coast once they had been displaced off the Midland main line by HSTs in the early 1980s with any great frequency. If you are looking for traction variety over the North Wales Coast then I would suggest 1985, but you would sacrifice one type of loco for another. In 1985 you would get ex Southern Region Cl.33s working loco hauled services over the route, but you wouldn't see Cl.40s anymore working passenger trains over that route, however there were a few class members retained in service for engineering work to do with the Crewe re-modeling. Further more you could get instances of different traction over the NWC as many locos coming off Crewe Works were 'run in' over the NWC between Crewe - Holyhead - Crewe, with the diagrammed diesel 'DIT'. I've got an article in a magazine which shows 37696at the head & 33002 dead in train with a rake of Mk.1s working 1116 Crewe - Holyhead & another photo with 47706 with 33022 dead in train on another rake of Mk.1s forming the 1408 Holyhead - Cardiff service. Also there is a photo of ex-works 47658 with 47452 dead in train working 0920 Euston - Holyhead on a rake of Mk.2Ds. If its variety you are after maybe 1985 period or a few years either side maybe a better bet. Also Llandudno Junction had Cl.56s stabled there for various duties during that time. The freight loads book don't give any info on parcels working, but to calculate the loadings isn't too difficult & from that you can calculate the number of vans the train is hauling, unless you have an official BR Newspaper & Parcels train workings book for the period you are going to do.
