The Coffee Break game and BNS diagram has prompted this one.

Theoreticical. Starting from a UK Main Line Station, what is the maximum distance
you can travel in getting back to the same station without your train changing it's direction of travel.

The station can be a through or terminal station.

Please give your route for this round robin run.

Short example: Oxford-Banbury-Birmingham SH-Worcester SH-Oxford

Penzance-Exeter-Clapham Jn-Stratford-Ipswich-Peterborough-Birmingham NS-Shrewsbury-Crewe-Stockport-York-Leeds-Carlisle-Kilmarnock-Glasgow (City union)- Falkirk G-Edinburgh-Newcastle-Doncaster-Sheffield-Derby-Birmingham-Worcester-Bristol-Penzance.

That's without looking at a map- heaven knows the distance.

Assuming shortest distance otherwise I'd go via Kent, Penzance-Bristol-BirminghamNS-Carlisle-Carstairs-Haymarket-EdinburghW-Doncaster-Sheffield-Derby-BirminghamNS-Bristol-Penzance.

If you wanted a Kent diversion, go Sheffield-StPancrasLL-Dartford-Ramsgate-Ashford-Redhill-Reading-Westbury-Taunton-Penzance.

Geoff
Ashford - Redhill - Reading requires a reversal at Redhill.

Doh! Forgot about TL and it used to be part of my daily commute.

Thanks for clarifying the route through Glasgow- nearly went on that tour but getting to Carlisle for 6 am was the main detraction.

Could you also add a bit of mileage at the Scottish end via Stirling - Alloa - Fife Circle?

And if you are allowed to go over the same route more than once, you can solve the Leeds reversal by going Stockport - Guide Bridge - Sheffield - Doncaster - Hambleton Jn. - Leeds - Harrogate - York - Leeds - Carlisle.

Adding even more mileage you could go Crewe - Warrington BQ - Earlestown - Manchester (Oxford Rd - Picc) - Stockport - Hazel Grove - Sheffield (although you would miss the delights of the 1 passenger train per week Stockport - Guide Bridge line).

While you are thinking about how to get more miles out of this, here's another poser for you. Where is it possible to get on a train in the UK and without reversing, go through ten consecutive stations all starting with the same letter?

No. You cannot travel over the same track more than once.

You may however travel the same route providing it is in the opposite direction.

Just to extend the options you can use freight only routes.

Just a quick guide on the distances, I have 1300K getting from Penzance to Edinburgh. Now have to get a distance getting back down.

Piccadilly line. Get on at Osterley headding westbound pass through, Houndslow East, Houdslow Central, Houndslow West, Hatton Cross, Heathrow terminal 4, Heathrow terminals 123,
Hatton Cross, Houndslow West, Houdslow Central, Houndslow East.

Possible because you go round a loop at heathrow and back.

One more question then, Dave. Are we restricted to routes carrying scheduled passenger services or can we put in other lines which have carried passenger excursions (such as the Blackburn - Hellifield Line)?

If we can do that the Harrogate loop disappears. but we can get from Leeds to Carlisle via Huddersfield - Manchester Victoria - Blackburn - Hellifield - Carnforth - Barrow which adds a satisfactory number of miles! If we can only use passenger carrying lines, we go Leeds - Huddersfield - Manchester (Picc - Oxford Rd) - Salford - Preston - Carnforth - Barrow.

Thankyou Postal :)

On another thought you could go through South wales.

Coming from Cardiff through port Talbot then at Briton Ferry take the Swansea District line, From there you take the Hendy Chord onto the heart of wales line to Craven Armes and Shrewsbury.

For those questioning which routes can be used, then other than already stated of doubling over the same route, anything goes.

Consider it as a Class "0" (Light Engine) move.

Oops, of course! In that case, Ashford-Redhill-Clapham-KensingtonO-ActonWells-Reading. And I guess to add a bit of mileage, Reading-Basingstoke-Salisbury-Westbury-Bristol. Hmm, not so sure but maybe even Westbury-Swindon-Oxford-Cotswolds-Wales-Bristol (vague!).

Good point, had wondered about Winchburgh/Fife circle.

In fact you could go Falkirk H, Waverley- Portobello /Sub /Haymarket, Fife Circle to Dunfermline via Kirkcaldy, Alloa, Stirling, Coatbridge, Motherwell, Carstairs, Slateford- Sub (otherway) Millerhill- Newcastle (via B&T).

Sadly it doesn't - there is no longer a link from the Leeds line to the Barrow line at Carnforth; it was removed decades ago. The only way around that would be a reversal on the WCML, which invalidates the route.

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.
