No surprises there then!!

It was obvious they weren't going to extend the franchise! Would have been a political nightmare if they took that one back under public control as well!!

Part of the problem being HMG did not understand the contracts it had signed with the TOCs!

But it isn't losing the franchise, it's only losing the oppertunity to EXTEND the agreement. Bloomin' headline writers!

Just like when NXEC let it be known that they would be in default later in the year unless there was a change in their economic fortunes and the press instantly trumpeted that the government was immediately renationalising the franchise.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good headline.

Quite how HMG ever thought it would get £1 Billion back from any of these franchises is beyond me. I doubt that any of them will achieve even half that amount in the current climate.
