Can anybody help me here.....?

I have just started to learn the ropes at Brighton, and 5H48 has successfully joined at platform 2 and its next movement is to the Lovers Walk Depot via the west carriage road at 00:40. The train however is now too long and is over the points that will route it this direction.

I made sure that the train it joined (2S42) was at the buffers before the join, but can't seem to figure out how to get it to the depot....?

Am I being daft and missing something here, or is it a timetable glitch that needs a fix....?

Thanks in anticipation of the usual helpful responses.

Incidentally, does anybody know what the max length of train in platform 2 that will allow this movement....?

I have just had a look and 5H58 is an 8-car scheduled to join 2S42, which is a 4-car already in platform 2. The 12-car result ends up filling up all of platform 2. I am almost certain this is a bug in the timetable – the train is far too long to fit behind the points leading to the West Carriage Road.

From what I can remember when I used to walk along platform 2 every morning (to reach the depot), I would say at least a 6-car train should fit behind the points to the West Carriage Road, probably an 8-car. I can’t say that I paid much attention to it at the time, though, and I have no empirical evidence to back it up.

If it's the default timetable...both should be 4 car to form 8 car joined. As 8 car in P2 Will fit to the WCR (May need a stopping position change - can't remember)

As you've already got them joined; Change thejoined train length to 164m (via f2 ) and you should be good to go

You can fit 8 coaches in between T661 and the buffer stops.

Well when that happens in real life, then it's of round the houses via Hove and Preston park.

Interesting. When I encounter this problem I edited the timetable and did exactly that. But I was concerned that I was entering LW from the wrong direction and would probably be cursed.

Editing trains on the run is a good learning tool for beginners. ( as a beginner, be sure to freeze the sim while you edit and validate)

It doesn't really matter which way you enter lovers Walk, they can all end up in the same place. We never really tell lovers walk that a train is coming through 29 points (north end) instead of west Carr road, we just do it and by the same token if they present a train at a different entry point and as long as it does not up set the platform workings too much then we just accept it. There is a lot of play behind the scenes between the station supervisor and lovers walk panel operator when things get changed around and usually when they have a plan then they let us know.

The only potential issue that can occur here is that the move via Hove and Preston Park ends up reversing the units that make up the train so they end up in the opposite order to the way they were expected. If the depot is busy and there is not much space available, it can take some time and effort to switch them around into the correct order again before they are moved into the shed for examination/maintenance. This is important if, for example, the unit at the stops end of the shed is supposed to stay for a couple of days for an in-depth exam or some sort of maintenance and the units stacked on top are expected to undergo lighter exams that are only expected to take a few hours or so. It is a problem, then, if the units arrive in the wrong order, essentially trapping the light exams behind the heavier one for two days! I know this is well outside the realms of SimSig, and usually is not a problem in real life, but is possibly something for those who like simulating more realistically to think about. Having said that, I would imagine this is one of the situations that Hooverman mentioned where the Yard Panel Supervisor and the Station Supervisor would communicate with each other before anything is done.

We had similar issues in Bristol if St Philips Marsh HSTD wanted the sets in with a particular power car leading. We had to get someone on the platform at Temple Meads to see which way round the train was, and then turn the set at Lawrence Hill if necessary. Or send it in via Bristol West rather than North Somerset Jn.

Whether a train is back to front on arrival at lovers walk because it's 12 vice 4 or 8, or there's been a points failure which as ment a round the houses trip from platform 2 or 1, well that's just life. Even though lover's and the station do communicate if no one tells the signaller then plans can quickly unravel and need to be reworked.

Most staff know that lover's is a cramped depot and will accept trains early off depot even if it's only as far as the carriage road until the right platform becomes free. During the early hours of the morning virtually every trains that's presented early will come into the station and berth.

I would like to think that between the station supervisor, lover's walk panel operator and the signaller on panel 6 we have a really good working relationship and that's something that you simulate in any sim. With all the phone work for all the unplanned unit swaps as trains are taken into and out of service during the day.

Setting the stopping position to 'Far End Exact' (FX) should do it.

Since raising this post way back in 2014 I have worked out how to get round it.

For those new to SimSig and / or the simulation, the following seems to work OK.

Make sure 2S42 stops at the buffers by editing the timetable BEFORE it ends its journey at Brighton. Do this by right clicking the train in the F2 Train List and then select Timetable > Edit Timetable. Select the Location List tab, click the last calling point (Brighton) and make sure that 'Far End Exact' is selected in the Stopping Position drop down list. Click OK a few times to close the editor.

The next thing to do is change the length of the joining train. Make sure this is done BEFORE it enters the sim on the F4 Timetable List. Find the train and then select it, then press the 'Edit' button on the right hand side. On the train characteristics tab you will see that the train length is shown. Halve this length and the train will enter as a 4 car set and not the 8 car of the original timetable.

Doing the above will allow the joined trains to be able to enter the Lover's Walk depot without any problems.
