Hi

I'm just intrigued, what is the Glasgow Airport Funnel. Is it the same as the Prestwick trip wire, so that if a plane crashes by landing too soon it automatically turns all signals to danger?

I tried googling it but all that comes up is pictures about a tornado

Many thanks
Mark

Is it not where the railway, highway and roads create a "funnel" past the end of the airport's runway? Maybe this map can explain it. View

I would have thought a Funnel would refer to the approach path onto the runway, given how close it is.

Basically , it means there is a connection to the signals via Tripwires which (god forbid) anything breaks the wires , the signals in the vicinity automatically return to danger. I believe there is a radio message broadcast which takes priority informing drivers in that area to bring their trains to an immediate halt. The ones at Glasgow and Prestwick Airports are approximately 1/4 mile long (I'm open to alternative figures on that one!) and are both sides of the line. Also , there is a tripwire on the Edinburgh Sim although I'm not sure if its simulated like Paisley.

And i'm open to corrections if I'm wrong on any of the above info

They are - code is cloned.

If you're simulating this on a model railroad or non-vdu signalling simulation at home, you can easily install a tiny switch, switches or relay. It all depends on how much current you want to control if the wire is tripped. You could even use an over-the-counter magnetic reed switch mounted to a tiny block (simulating a door) with a small tension spring at the far end, so it snaps back after being pulled, or a small physical latch if you just want it to stay latched. Ask in any model railroad forum.

If you're simulating this for something like an external garage or shed, again you could use a magnetic reed switch if the wire is close to the ground (but beware of personal liability issues here). A trip wire at head or shoulder height is dangerous and any of these measures can be a nuisance. Consider a PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) instead. Note - tiny versions of this are available for hobby electronics and may suit any model railway requirements.

If you're trying to simulate this on SimSig you could try asking the devs for an orange vertical line within a rectangular box on each side of the line similar to a bridge or LC, but one that triggers a unique message such as "tripwire triggered by low flying aircraft" along with a request to include a checkbox to play a specific sound such as "sproinggg", followed by the unmistakeable sound of an aircraft crashing into a block of flats, as that's usually the consequence of an aircraft hitting a tripwire or power line, unless, like a cropduster, it carries wire-cutting equipment. But your request shouldn't concern the devs. After all, no damage to rolling stock or injury to railway passengers occurred - just another routine day for NetRail.

On the other hand, if you're trying to simulate this because you live close to an airport runway - you'll also need a pair of tall towers (high TV antenna masts) mounted on your roof. From here on, you're on your own. Good luck.

what's that got to do with Paisley?
trains running with 15mph speed restriction.

No idea.

The 'funnels' are the flightpaths approaching Glasgow or Prestwick Airport. A tripwire is installed, so that if the worst happens the signaller knows and signals are put back to danger. After an activation, you'll receive messages in the Incident Report from technicians investigating the activation.

As SimSig doesn't simulate fatal accidents, it will always be a false alarm, but you still have to go through the procedure until it's all been sorted.

The procedure should be explained by the messages in the incident report? As I understand it, there'll be a period where no trains can run, followed by trains running at restricted speed, and then normal running.

thanks Steamer. it's a bit hard to read messages when consentrating on somewhere
else the messages flash by to quick. need a bigger message box.

They should also appear in the Incident Report (F7), which can be opened and read at any time.

Put your cursor on the edge of the box and drag?

uboat, you didn't mention the Paisley sim in your post, so how could I have known what you wanted to do with a trip wire? I probably shouldn't have wasted my time and effort by taking a guess. Never played Paisley anyway.

This is a posting in the "Paisley" Sim topic though.

Couldn't help but notice there was a typo "tipwire" in one of the incident messages, think it was the staff on site or ESR message.

A little off topic but the signallers usually get a phone call from the control tower at Prestwick or Glasgow Airport if they are informed in advance that an incoming aircraft has a problem. One of them told me it happens maybe every other month or so.

Don't quote me on that last part. I'd hate for someone to start angrily waving pan/mayday call statistics in my face.

Other airports have replacement buttons in the tower but not here.
