Hi all.

Currently working on a north wales coast 1991 summer timetable. 1D88 is the Tuesday wednesday only crewe-llandudno-holyhead and its raising a question for me.

It stops at Llan jct for water before running to Llandudno. It then runs back and has a 10 min stop at Llan jct before running to holyhead. It doesnt have time to run round at Llandudno Jct on the return but I can't find any photographic evidencd of it topping and tailing. Can anyone confirm how it was worked?

My best guess is one of the speedlink or CE locos stabled at Llandudno Jct TC would have been attached and detatched temporarily to assist.

Can't see it being an RfD loco on hand at llandudno Jn. Can't recall any freight locos being diagrammed to work trains on the North Wales Coast regularly as there were some loco bashers on the loco control at Liverpool Street during the early 1990s & we used to use a certain 'AB' enquiry which would list all freight locos allocated to work class 1 & class 2 trains across the country & I don't recall seeing any freight locos allocated to work the train your on about. If it was top n tailed between Llandudno Jn & Llandudno - Llandudno Jn I suspect that it was covered by a Provincial or Regional Railways Cardiff based Cl.37/4. There's certainly nothing in the 1990, 1991 or 1992 WCML North & North Wales Trip Notices to indicate any trip loco being allocated to cover passenger work in between booked diagram work.

It's a long shot, but there is a pic at http://www.penmorfa.com/Archive/thirteen.htm with the caption "37504 leads 33009 into Prestatyn on the 11.18 Crewe - Holyhead on March 12th 1986. This train always ran with a refurbished loco on Wednesdays. The test loco returned light while the next booked working of the 33 took it to Cardiff." If it is the same train, did one of the locos do a RR during the first stop at LJ so that it was TnT from there on.

There is a PDF extract on the net for a book published by Ty Mawr publications (Class 20 - Ty Mawr Publications) which includes this sentence:

" The class also took on diagrammed summer passenger workings from Derby to and from Llandudno during the early 1990’s with a fill in turn to “pull back”
the North Wales Coast Express steam working from Llandudno to Llandudno Junction included for a period."

At the foot of the page is a pic with the caption "Having just arrived on the 08.11 departure from Stoke, 20163 and 20178 wait departure from Llandudno on a North Wales Coast Express “pull back” trip to Llandudno Junction. They will eventually return to Derby at 17.14. September 10th 1991."

You will have the details in the WTT but presumably the 2 x 20s were lying over at Llandudno and dragged the steam working back to LJ before returning LE to pick up their return Llandudno - Derby working.

Thats it John.

2D64 Derby - Llandudno arrives Llandudno 11:19. shunts its stock into the sidings and then waits for 1D88 to arrive at 12:02
1D89 departs 12:30 with the 20's on. they come off at the Junction and run back light (not timetabled) and run round their stock and work 2D90 back at 16:44 to Derby. the Kettle doesn't call at Llandudno on the way back.

Thanks!
