Does anybody know whether this is still going or what happened to it, used to play a lot then lost the link, now can't find it.

It was a game where you set up and ran your own company. Chose the routes, rolling stock and frequencies

TOC Game came to an end a few years ago I believe I'd stopped playing it a bit before. I understand that one of our Dutch friends (name escapes me) obtained the source code from Oskari (Finnish creator) and was intending to host but that was over a year ago now. I think I had a link at one time to resurrected site but it was not fully functional at that time.

TOC Game was a train management game whereby you had 300 days per game (a day was 3 real hours long) or till a person exceeded the target profit. There were around 12? players in each game and what you did was, with your starting capital, you bought trains and then set up services on the available lines, trying to earn profits to reinvest in more trains and others competed against you.

That's the jist anyway. Initially, despite the owner living in Finland, it was the UK that was simulated and most of the scenarios in what had becomes version 6 I think were written/rewritten by me; latterly some European scenarios appeared.

Okay, thanks for replies.

It sounded like quite a fun game. Very similar objective to Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe it seems.

Wish Id have known about it earlier now..

Well, that explains why Peter used to beat me all the time, he wrote them

Was a good game though, shame it isn't still going

Indeed. For some unknown reason, despite knowing about it I never did actually try it. In hindsight I'm starting to regret that now.

Due to time and knowledge restrictions (new job, this time on the train and lo longer at the signalling dept.) I really struggled "keeping" the game to work.
Sometimes the server got stuck, and even a reset didn't work. Scenario's were all "buggy" and all need a re-editing because somehow all stations seem to have a 256ft platform.

If there are people interested to work as a team and get it up and running again then please contact me.

I would be interested in helping; but it would depend on the programming language used and how much, if any, re-writing was required.

I'd be interested if we where going to do it as a team based project. Doesn't matter what language it's written in to be honest, if I don't know it I'll learn it.

Yeah; I have no problem learning programming languages but C++ and the like (although I doubt it is C++ very much) is way over my head. From what I remember it was PHP coding but I'm not sure how it all linked in without seeing some kind of backend code.

I have the ironic situation of being able to understand C++, but when I went to learn C I couldn't get my head round it, that'll teach me for learning them the "wrong" way round.

Seeing the scenario files should tell us what language it is written in and also give us something to work on if we do attempt to revive the game.

Peter,

If you'd also happen to have a set of the "game rules" or procedures that would probably help quite a bit. Maybe use the same game mechanics or even see if the could be augmented. I mention this since if there's a plan to rebuild the game it might well be worthwhile to see if anything could be added to it.

Maybe the scenario files could give a clue (not necessarily though) as to the programming language although if there's no source code to use as a base and it needs to be built up from the ground (almost) any language could be used.

Appears to be whats left of the latest incarnation of the game and from what I can tell it is predominantly PHP code.

This domain is still registered to Mr. Otto so at what stage are we at with it? Can you remember?

Mr Otto is Maartin as posted at 11 above- rules etc are as on the link provided, though I may have a copy as I proof read them at the time. I'll dig out an example of the scenario data shortly.

Yes it's coming back to me:

Here's the basic stuff I did for Ireland (never used as we needed a stock list which was never done).

You needed a map and the scenario data




and then I have a screen shot of the stock order form for 1970s unit data





Hope that is of interest/use - think I have all that I did filed away and available as and when. Happt to provide advice based on memory etc as and when.

That is actually very interesting. It's good to see some of the stuff used to generate the scenarios etc. It'd be interesting to see how the PHP (if that's what is used) interprets it.

And I was aware that Maarten Otto that you mentioned earlier was the Mr Otto that I was referring to; hence why I didn't actually say the full name; I felt Mr was a sufficient shortened version of MaaRten. :p

Anyways; if Maarten does still have the files; or can remember the FTP credentials for it and send/post a couple of files we can get an idea of how it all works behind the scenes.
