Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help me set up my Virgin Media Superhub to host games.

I'm a little confused by it all.

Any help would be brilliant!

Cheers

I need similar advice, but for a BT Home Hub, I'd love to host games, but all this stuff about IP's and ports baffles me, I need a very simple step by step dummies guide methinks

the problem with giving step by step instructions is that each router is different so a generic set of instructions isn' really possible. the best thing to do is search the wiki for Port Forwarding and read through the information provided there. a link is provided to a website that specilises in port forwarding which will be able to help with most routers.

Try this YouTube video. Note that you may have to re-set the hub's admin password if you've never accessed it before.

1) Go to: the Port Forward website.

2) Select your router brand and model from the drop down lists to the top left (ignore any software they try to sell you or make you download, you don't need this).

3) Find the "Default Guide" for setting up port forwarding.

4) The usual ports that SimSig uses are 50505 and/or 50507 for more recent sims, and 4321 for much older sims. Using the provided information, set up SimSig to use the port range 50505 to 50507, or just to 4321. If you want to host both older and newer sims, I'd recommend 2 separate entries to point to these different ports.

NB: With newer sims, you can choose the port number to use. If you wish, you can pick some other port number, but this would need setting up as above.

Lots of people are very wary of hosting a multiplay because it all looks too complicated and difficult, but I can assure you it isn't. Anyone trying for the first time does need to start with a positive attitude, does need to turn off the mental blocks because it is "too complicated" and does need to correctly follow the instructions on sites like Matt's link. Once you have your head round it, you can set a new port forward or edit an existing one (because maybe your internal IP address has changed following a router re-sync or re-boot) in a lot less than 5 minutes.

Look for the Netgear VMDG480 in the list of supported routers on the Port Forwarding site linked to above.

What exactly are you trying to do? As your external IP address which is the one you have posted is very little to do with forwarding the ports to your internal IP address.

Same problem, I've tried my best, but port forwards port checker says that it can't determine my IP, and the port is not open :(

I am a total noob with computers though really.

I am trying to forward my port but it comes up with ''we were no able to determine your external ip'' when it says on the SimSig link that my external ip is 88.108.27.16

Port Forwarding is actually quite simple, what I did was open the control panel for my router which is obtainable through entering 192.168.1.1 (NOTE: DOES NOT APPLY TO ALL ROUTERS) into your internet browser. It should ask you for a username and password, which will be found somewhere on the router itself. Enter this and it should bring up a window with all the settings for the router.

Now select the heading which refers to Port Forwarding/Port Triggering (We only want Port Forwarding) and then its fairly self explanatory from there. It will be something along the lines of "Add Custom Service", then entering details such as the Type of Port (TCP or UDP), the actual port number range, normally referred to as Starting and Ending Ports. For SimSig, it would be Start Port of 50505 and end Port of 5050X (X standing for what ever you want).

The port you use for Simsig can be anything you want it to be, but the defaults are 50505-50509.

Then you normally need your Internal IP to have as the server IP Address. You can find this by opening any Simsig Sim, clicking Network Play, Selecting Server and looking at the list. An example would be like 192.168.1.5

If you don't have a static Internal IP Address, then the Internal IP will change whenever you reboot the router. This will mean that you will have to change the port forwarding settings in your router control panel every time you reboot the router.

Im sure that there is a tutorial in the Wiki for Port Forwarding, but no-one seems to look there anymore.

Two clicks from the sticky topic in Session details.
