Notes for v2.0

After many trials, I have now added some freight movements, which makes the early morning a little more interesting.
Also all up LSWR trains going through Exeter have a banker, and some other freight have bankers at Totnes or Wellington. Beware - the bankers often have to reverse to go home, as there are no crossing loops at the tops of the banks!

Notes for v1.0

A Saturday in late July 1922.

It is a challenge to try to run a 1922-type service over the modern layout using SimSig.
This timetable includes a number of compromises.

There are no freight services.
Any suggestions as to timings and types of freight services would be welcome.

There are no branch line trains to or from Tiverton, or Hemyock as the connections to the main line simply do not exist.

Each junction and terminus should ideally have an engine shed and a carriage siding.

The timetable assumes the following:

At Totnes, the current Loco Siding has to double as carriage shed. All trains to and from Buckfastleigh go to the Loco Siding for marshalling.

At Paignton, Goodrington CS performs the same function. All up trains leave from Platform 2; all down trains use platform 1.

At Newton Abbott, Hackney Sidings is used for loco shed and marshalling.
All down trains use platform 1, all up trains use platform 2, and platform 3 is for the Moretonhampstead line. At busy times, it can be useful to use Platform 3 if needed.

2 trains terminate at Teignmouth. The morning train can run 'wrong line' from Dawlish Warren after the three expresses have passed. It will reverse automatically but may need a SPAD authorisation at UM208.
The next train is more difficult, and reverses near Newton Abbott. Tricky!

There are trains that terminate at Dawlish Warren.

Exeter to Heathfield trains leave on the Heathfield branch through Alphington Road siding. In order to use the automatic reverses available, down trains pass through Exeter St Thomas, and on to the City Basin reverse, where they need SPAD authorisation before crossing to the Up main line into Exeter St Thomas, where they will reverse automatically and move on to the branch line. Again, can be tricky with other passing expresses!

Generally the timetable uses West Yard as the engine shed, and Riverside Yard as the carriage sidings.

There are trains that terminate at Tiverton Junction.

Taunton.
Fairwater Yard and the Headshunt are used as engine shed and carriage sidings.
Platform 2 is the only one with access to the yard.
Platforms 2 and 3 are the only ones useable for trains which terminate and reverse.
Platform 2 is the only platform with a route to and from Minehead and Ilfracombe (as has been noted elsewhere).

So the through trains from West Somerset to London will need SPAD authorisation at 627 to allow them to reach Platform 4 or 5, and if the route through the Goods receiving area is blocked with empty stock and light engines, routing down trains to West Somerst over the Down Main Line will need SPAD authorisation at signal 22.

Still, it does work, provided you consider platform 2 as a very precious resource - as blocking it blocks all access to the engine shed and carriage sidings - thanks to those who have played with me to test this.

Exmouth Junction shed has only one entry/exit point on the sim – CE Works.
The timetable assumes Light engines leave the shed (CE Works) and pick up stock from carriage sidings at Rev at Exmouth Junc East. Returning trains either wait in the carriage sidings or return their engine to the Shed (CE Works)

The single-track routes between Pinhoe and Honiton, and between Crediton and Okehampton create their own challenges. I have entered the timetable almost as written, except where a few minutes difference will allow a train trhough.
There are three options as to how play this:
1. ‘Remove’ every up train at Pinhoe, and every down train at Yeford Junction (Okehampton line) – effectively making the sim simulate the other track only.
2. Authorising a SPAD on almost every train entering the single-line section and then removing it when two trains meet.
3. Authorising a SPAD when necessary, and exchanging the two trains when they meet. I could timetable this in, but of course the place and time of the meet will vary if trains are late!

Some timings at Topsham and Eggesford have been adjusted to allow for trains to pass close to the scheduled time, but the afternoon service takes no account of the single-line working.

Repost sorry placed in wrong forum

Now a problem which I don't know if it has been stated before - 7B06 stopped at Crediton (10 mins early)and could not shunt through to s765 (to shunt back to siding as too long for platform) as down train approaching. After a few minutes 7B06 decided to reverse itself back to Newton St. Cyres managed to correct it before it straddled Cowley Bridge thank gawd!

Advice for the first time user take any delays/failures off until you get the hang of all the bankers/connections - started off bravely with 2 failures and medium train delays and got into a hell of a mess - still great fun though. If I had hair it would have been pulled out by now!
Thanks Tony;)

These '22 timetables are great fun, I like lots of shunting and odd moves.
I'm on my third attempt, currently at 9:39, with 65% ;)

Regarding the single line sections, I've found a 4th option.
It's kind of a bug exploit, but it works :)
Apparently, the train collision detection only checks when a train is stopped at a station. If you're careful, they can go right through each other as long as it happens away from a station. Occasionally you get a station meet, but some careful reversing will allow them to pass each other. I've got stickies for each single line, with what trains are going in what direction and in what order, and if I'm reversing them to get them past,I make sure I mark it. Also, not setting routes over the single lines, or using the departure buttons seems to help, use authorize a SPAD instead. I like this way better, I feel like I've failed if I have to remove a train...

Thanks for the encouragements and comments.
I know 7B06 is too long - maybe I should shorten it to get it into the Crediton sidings. I think it starts to move back towards Newton St Cyres, because in SimSig a 7XXX goods train is not particularly fussy about keeping to a route. If there is no obstruction or signal in the direction it wants to go, it will start, even though it is not signalled into Crediton siding.
I didn't know SimSig allowed trains to pass on a single track - I have always found they just came to a stand and waited, saying train 'XXXX in front', but I have found Light Engines passing through trains standing at the platform in Taunton.
If anyone is interested in participating in a West Country 1922 multiplayer game (Exeter, Bristol, Gloucester, Westbury) I might try and set one up again - but I am not sure when I will have a long enough single period of time in which to host it.
