It's 3:14 AM and 6V24 has been waiting at Westbury Down Receiving since 2:52, not due to depart until 3:49. As you can see, I have set a route (for 7O52) into the Down Yard 1-6. All of a sudden I get a phone call from 6V24 saying he's been waiting at red signal 202 for 5 minutes now and wants to get going. But he's not due to leave until 3:49. So why the hurry?

I had the same problem with an earlier train (can't remember the headcode) in the same sim (Westbury loader v4.2 b2), but don't recall encountering this in the pre-loader version.

Not new to loader sims. Non passenger services don't have to adhere to precise timings so the driver is basically telling you "Me and my train are ready if you want to get shot of me from here" and you can either say "Aye, on you go" or "Naw, I've got 1X99 to come through yet and I don't want you in the way of it. Stay where you are till your booked time."

On the other hand, 1X99 might be running 45 minutes late and keeping 7Z45 until it's booked time might just make it later so getting rid of it as soon as may be an option you'll jump at.

If my memory is working correctly, Class 0/1/2/5 trains should wait for due time. Other classes do not have the same constraint and may wish to start moving at a random interval in advance on their due time (which reflects the real world as the driver may have arrived early on his previous working/booked on early/cut short his meal break or whatever and there is no reason to hold the departure back). In the real world there may be a reason to hold the departure back (e.g. Class 3 or Class 4 Parcels trains waiting for a specific timed consignment) so in those circumstances it is up to the TT writer to add a relevant rule.

A good real world example of this Maxand is on the Llangollen sim (Not sure if you have played it).

Normally on a "Timetable B" there is an ECS working from Pentrefelin to Llangollen formed of a DMU. Then a light locomotive from the MPD to Llangollen. The light locomotive is timetabled to traverse the single line section between Goods Junction and Llangollen after the DMU, however quite regularly in the morning I get a call attention on the block from Goods Junction and get offered an early light locomotive.

Conversely at the end of the day, if I have a locomotive ready to go back on shed and there is nothing about and the crew are ready I will offer it on and get it away early.

General comment about the loader first: there is very little difference between functionality in loader sims and in exe sims once the sim has started. It's just that you see more loader sims these days as the exes will be retired in a few months. I can almost see the one-man exe preservation society kicking into gear already.

As for waiting for departure time, which has been the case since approximately 1999:
- Classes 1 and 2 will wait for time
- Classes 3 and 5 will depart up to a couple of minutes early
- (Can't remmember 9)
- Remainder may wait booked time or early

Real life (well, as it used to be, anyway).

Train Crew Supervisor has a spare driver and reckons he may want the one booked to 6V24 for a job later in the day.

Driver is booked PNB, relieve 6V24 then book off. If he cuts his PNB short (don't tell the guv'nor, nor the Union rep - they fought long & hard for proper official PNBs) he can get an early finish. (Feature request hint to core code writers - under these circumstances the loco is liable to have undiscovered reserves of power and speed limits turn out to be a little elastic (or something) )

TCS knows he's going to be in trouble a bit later. A driver working in cut short his PNB earlier in the shift and is only too happy to be asked to work 6V24 - people get killed in the rush when overtime's on offer!

There's been an illegal changeover (two drivers have swapped the back halves of their shift), so the booked man gets to go home well early; the bloke working 6V24 now has every incentive to get a move on so he doesn't end up with any delays that need investigating (with the inevitable Form 1 that follows).

That's a few possibilities I can think of. Most of them result in the train's performance being miraculously enhanced on departure, though the effect is clearly most pronounced in option 2.
