Associate taking snapshot with sound file 30/01/2014 at 13:55 #54594

I don't bother manually naming saved games when I exit, I prefer to take snapshots at regular intervals (10 or 30 mins) and let SimSig do the work for me.

One problem with SimSig, as with most computer games, is that if you enjoy playing it, it can become addictive to the point where you lose track of time. One solution might be to play a sound (.wav file) every time a snapshot is taken (I tend to miss them on the Message screen as they are soon swamped by later messages), so hearing this sound makes me realize it's time to reacquaint myself with the real world, and exit at this point.

There are other solutions, of course, but they are not synchronized to snapshots and might become very irritating if, say, they fire when much has elapsed since the last automatic snapshot was taken.

Thanks for considering this suggestion.

I'm wondering if it's a "general simulation message" which can currently be linked to a sound?

It is a "general simulation message" for which you can set a sound through F3 but that will bring the same sound for other events as well.

Thanks, I didn't realize "general simulation messages" included "snapshot taken".

However, in view of my earlier remarks about wishing to set a time limitation on playing, either a separate snapshot-sound file link (via the optional checkbox as usual) or maybe even a new, separate "end of session" message linked to its own sound file would be welcome. However, for the latter, extra code would be needed to set an expiry time linked to the displayed sim time and maybe the snapshot code.

Here's a sample sound file that could be used for end of session.

After all that, I tried linking "general simulation messages" to a distinctive sound and find that it proves a good solution to my original problem. The only times I hear it (at my playing level, ymmv) is after the sim is initially loaded, and when a snapshot is taken.

Well, OK, on the Westbury sim.

Maybe Peter could enlighten us as to what other messages are in this group. Finishing loading a sim is another, I've discovered. Perhaps this should be in the Wiki.

A lot is written about the evils of gambling addiction. It's no accident that the current euphemism for gambling is "gaming", and by association this includes addiction to computer games. SimSig is no exception; in fact, whenever I walk into a pub casino, I feel almost like being in a control room, mesmerised by flashing lights and moving objects. SimSig even has slots. All we need now is a way to feed BitCoins into it and GeoffM and Peter B could be rich beyond their wildest dreams.

No, sorry, I don't know; the above was an educated guess.

You could set the f3 message to report in a unique colour and note when it comes up.
