Didcot S938 Approach Release faulty in V4.3b7 of the Swindid si 10/02/2014 at 17:20 #55368

When I set a route from S938 (Up Main) at Didcot to any of S924 (Relief Line), S926 (Goods Line) or S2201 (West Curve), the signal does not clear (i.e. Approach Release) until the approaching train has come to a complete stand for several seconds at the signal. This behaviour does not occur when similar routes are set from signals S952, S940 or S924, which are also Approach Released, so I suspect something is amiss with the controls on signal S938.

Has anyone else come across this behaviour?

For info, I'm running version 4.0.25 of the Loader, version 4.3 build 7 of the sim and the Swindon Summer 2005 v4.0 WTT.

Definitely happens for every train.

I would imagine the time is set as per the real box, which due to the way SimSig drivers approach red signals, is often too long.

Ticket number 10411 raised for this issue.

Thanks for the reply, Stephen. I would have thought that signals S952, S940 and S924 would also suffer the same problem if the times had all been set as per the real box. It will be interesting to see what the developer finds on this one.

Cheers,

Lyn

It could be set wrong, but from looking at some timings with Karl for NWC, we had some that when set to the tables were fine in SimSig and some that were too long.

If memory serves me correctly, which is by no means certain, the routes with faster approach speds were the biggest trouble, which is then compounded by the drivers reaction time if the signal does not clear before it stops.

It would be interesting to see how the new defensive driving feature works with this, and other related issues. Will have to find time to have a play with it.

When I did some tests before reporting the problem on the Forum, I found that signal S924 (with route set to S916) cleared with the train speed at 25mph, signal S940 (with route set to S940 or S2201) cleared at 20mph and signal S952 (with route set to S940) cleared at 40mph. Signals S952 and S938 are both on the Up Main, so trains will surely approach them at about the same speed, thus I would guess the problem is probably linked to the settings for S938, but I could be wrong.

I've never had a play with the new defensive driving feature, so like you, I must find some time to have a look at it.

Thought I'd raise this one again, Stephen, as it's nearly a year since I first reported it.

Has there been any progress with the issue raised in Ticket No. 10411, please?

I've not looked at Swindon for a while but looking at the data it is set to clear after 37s TC occupancy, don't know why but that's the factor that dates from the stand-alone paged Didcot.

Thanks for the info on signal 938, Peter. Other signals in the area of S938 clear while approaching trains are travelling at a sensible speed, but when approaching S938, they come to a complete stand before the signal clears, which suggests that the Approach Release Timer needs reducing. It's not a major issue, but is something you may wish to change when you are next working on the sim.

I've got another issue which was mentioned in the '1944 Fictional Timetable' posts (see the last couple of posts here). I'll re-raise it as a sim issue so that it isn't 'lost' amongst the discussions on the timetable.

Lyn Greenwood
