To be fair, all re-joins and run-arounds have worked smoothly in this sim - until now.

Playing Swindon Summer 2005 v4.0

4D04 enters the Goods Loop at Foxhall Junction where I stopped it at S926 to allow loco 0D04 to detach at front. I cleared a route for it to S916, whence it dutifully reversed along the Relief line and finally to S949 (there being no other traffic around). I let it reverse again to rejoin 4D04, then found it wouldn't rejoin. The Train list shows it facing Up at Foxhall Junction, with 4D04 in front, whereas 4D04 is facing Up, waiting for 0D04 to join it. 4D04 subsequent journey is Down to Chipping Sodbury.

I've tried reversing 0D04 and re-joining it, reversing 4D04, all to no avail. Since 4D04 is now without motive power I can't remove 0D04 and expect 4D04 to manage on its own. I don't know how to edit the TT to get around this and there is no "Force Join" command in SimSig. Since this is happening on a goods line, not at a platform, there's nothing I can do to adjust platform lengths either, to make it happen.

Is there any quick-and-dirty solution to force a join? Thanks in advance.

Have you made sure their timetables both know that they are in the place they believe themselves to be joining. I have had this happen then found 1 or both trains hadn't stepped up their timetables to the correct position.

Obviously, you do not read or understand 0D04's timetable! You need to signal it to 951, then 6420 to 926.
It will reverse and join to 4D04 correctly. Under no circumstances do you use the main lines for shunting unless it is strictly tabled to do so.

To answer your question, you need to adjust the timetables to have them join at the same location.

To expand slightly: the train is timetabled to reverse at signal 6420. The default route from 933 to 949 takes the first crossover onto the Up Main, so the train will never pass 6420 and can't stop behind it. I assume that once the train was behind 938 you reversed it manually? If so, the train is still *looking* to reverse behind 6420 when it enters the goods loop. It won't recognise 4D04 because it's still looking for 6420.

If you're desperate to use the Up Main to reverse on, you can key the first crossover normal to force the route to go past 6420, so the train will stop there and reverse. However, I agree with Barry that to do so is bad practise, as you're obstructing a line for no good reason- just use the Relief lines as timetabled.

To fix the problem, open F2>Right click train> Edit Timetable. Go to the 'Locations' tab, highlight the final line and press 'Set Next/Current location'. Then press OK. The train will now be *looking* for 4D04 at Didcot West End and will find it.

Thanks for your explanations. I didn't expect a run-around to be so route-critical. I had other trains blocking 0D04's scheduled route, so I used whatever runaround route seemed convenient at the time, as I would have expected to have occurred in a real-life situation.

However, editing 0D04's Next/Current location is certainly worth considering and I will remember that one.

As the timetable is being interpreted by a computer and not a driver, correct routing is very important. Generally, you can only use a different line when the location is general (e.g. "Didcot Parkway", it doesn't matter which platform you use*, similarly "[Generic Station] West Reverse"or where more than one signal is named in the location (e.g. Didcot E rev Sig 6404/05) which will allow you to reverse behind either 6405 or 913 (which requires a route set towards 6404).

Another exception is where more than one route exists between two locations (e.g. Didcot East- Oxford via Avoider or Parkway), either will be accepted (and the TT location will update accordingly) provided a station call isn't missed.

*For the train to recognise where it is, obviously you can't route an Oxford train to P1, and the driver would challenge that route.

Following on from this point and your previous postings about wanting to learn about ARS, it all leads us to something else to consider.

If you are running under ARS and then route a train off its ARS path, you need to follow that up in due course by checking that it is back on its ARS path and picking up the TT. This will usually happen automatically, but I'm guessing that in the case of 0D04 there is not enough information after your last route setting to enable the TT to pick up its correct location.

ARS is sophisticated to the extent that even if a train is off its planned path you can restore its ARS status (right click on TD - make train ARS) if it has the opportunity at the next divergence to get back onto its planned path. Once it is back on the planned path it will pick up its ARS status anyway (and the TT will hopefully step up).

As another thought, if you have cancelled a route for anything in an ARS area this will cancel the ARS. You need to click on all the flashing magenta (ARS roundels) in the area to turn the ARS back on.

Sorry, I was trying to learn Swindon A&B thoroughly first so disabled all ARS for this session. Forgot to mention that earlier. Nevertheless, your commments about re-routing ARS trains are timely here and I will refer to your post when I turn ARS on.

An alternative for next time could be to launch with ARS and then disable every sub-area. That way, you're still in control but you will get off-path messages and if it gets busy you turn ARS back on for a portion of the simulation.

This time I routed 0D04 exactly as scheduled (914 back past 6420 and there was no problem re-joining. Thanks again.
