Train Dividing Issue 21/03/2015 at 11:32 #70144

Relative SimSig newbie here, although I have worked my way through the Stafford sim with a friend. I've started on the Lime Street sim, and think it's quite good for single-user operations, but I have a problem when it comes to dividing trains. When I get a train that has been platformed and needs dividing, I'm struggling to work out how to work it so that both headcodes appear on my screen. I do make sure to wait until I get a message saying that the train has finished dividing, but I'm not sure where to go next. Help would be appreciated, as I do quite like the Lime Street sim, but I want to make sure I know what I'm doing with regard to splitting trains!

In the train's timetable, when it arrives, it should say something like "DR: 2E01 N:2E02", for example. Those are the headcodes you will need. To input them, right-click on the current headcode, click "interpose" and type a new one in, then press enter.

If there isn't a headcode there, press I, type the headcode, press OK then click on the signal at which you would like to put the headcode.

Hope this helps,
DSW

Also works on Arrows at Buffer Stops, allowing you to interpose the first train to leave at the country end by interposing on the signal, and the second train to leave on the buffer stops.

also instead of typing I, you can right click on the signal and choose "interpose description" if "right click cancels route" is disabled in the F3 menu.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

As others have said, interpose one description at the signal and one at the 'exit arrow' at the buffers. If you find you have more descriptions than places to interpose them, you can use sticky notes to remind yourself what's also in the platform. Also, there's no need to wait for the 'finished dividing' message- you can interpose as soon as the train arrives in the platform. The advantage of this method is that you know you've got everything- divide and join activities disappear from the train's timetable when they've been completed.

Some suggestions:

I have found that dividing trains tends to occur at one or just a few platforms for that particular sim, which you get to know fairly well. Therefore create a "permanent" sticky note large enough to accommodate all the changes and move it conveniently near that platform. Then you can laboriously copy-type the details from the Show Timetable window into the sticky for when the train finally arrives, as a reminder. (SimSig is still too primitive to allow direct copying of data from this window to the Windows clipboard!)

If the train divides into two, such as in the example used in this thread (DR: 2E01 N:2E02), the New service will be in the same direction as the original train, so interpose 2E02 into the berth when it arrives. Likewise, 2E01 is most likely to depart in the reverse direction, but don't take this for granted! Once you have typed 2E02 into the sticky - with at least one space on each side - it should appear as a blue underlined hyperlink, which when clicked will bring up 2E02's timetable. This is a great advantage of using sticky notes. Click the 2E02 sticky link (or its berth if you already interposed it) and make sure it really does depart in the reverse direction.

However, by doing this you also overwrite the previous timetable, so it's best to include the parent train's headcode in the sticky too so you can click this to check if you made any errors in the transcription.

Another advantage of using a sticky as an intermediate data store is that if you see a pattern of headcodes for each divide, all you need do is edit your original entry. E.g., if the timetable for the next train that divides is DR: 2E03 N:2E04 you don't have to wipe out the line and re-type, simply edit the relevant numbers.

Add the departure time for each train spawned by the parent to your sticky if there's going to be any significant delay.

This is Liverpool Lime Street — if a train were to depart in the reverse direction, it'd be going through the buffer stops and out onto the street

Pedantic note: the next train doesn't necessarily carry on in the same direction. Indeed, if a train were to do this at Lime Street, there would be a lot of twisted metal!

Wrong way round- all trains depart in the reverse direction, relative to the direction of the arriving train.

I think I've got the hang of dividing trains, but I've now encountered another issue. I've just sent 5F461 into Platform 6 as stated, and it asks me to interpose J:2F031 on it, which I've done, but then I get asked to interpose J:5F461 and J:2H461, returning one half to the original headcode. Both trains are supposed to leave at the same time, but 5F461 has nothing after its departure from Liverpool Street. I'm a bit stuck as to what to do next.

What that means is, 5F461 and 2F031 attach to form 2H461

Ah, right - thanks. I apologise in advance if I come up with more questions, but I'm still quite new to SimSig. I'm getting to grips with it, though, and was grateful for a friend's help with running the Stafford simulator together over a few days.

Not a problem, but when you get a moment it's also a good idea to have a read of the Wiki which contains all manner of useful general information, as well as simulation specific manuals.
