Am getting a lot of calls about early running freight trains, some of which are only a minute or two early. I assume in reality the signaller would only make a phone call if the train was running significantly early?

Yes, I think a "minimum earliness" cutoff is required before generating a phone call (15 minutes?).

I had one earlier which asked if I would accept a train 30 seconds early. I said no.

I was thinking about this earlier. Unless the train is ridiculously early (an hour or more) and thus likely to get in the way if something unforeseen develops, it doesn't really matter how early it is in terms of the number of minutes - it certainly doesn't make sense to impose an arbitrary threshold. It's far more important to consider the order that trains will arrive in - I'd suggest that it'd be far more important to generate a call if the early running would change the order of trains at the entry point. It might also be helpful, if that's the case, to state the train that it'll be running in front of (i.e. "will be ready to enter your area at 09:15, before 1Cxx" - bonus points if it can state the margin in front of that following train too!) As an example earlier, Trent offered an Up freight six minutes early from Clay Cross. I misread the simplifier and said yes, only to find that it was actually booked three or four minutes behind a class 1 (and therefore entered right in front of it). I'd guess that it's not practical to expect the simulation to work out whether there's a suitable margin for the early-runner to get to the next regulating point without delaying the following train, so that needs to be factored into the decision too (whereas, in reality, the receiving box would only need to worry about whether it could be dealt with ahead of its booked path, with the sending box usually responsible for working out whether there's sufficient margin). Though if we're adding a feature that calculates margins, it would also be nice if Simsig took some heed of it once in a while - e.g. a class 6 is less likely to appear if there's a class 1 booked right behind (although the situation should still happen occasionally!). I regularly curse my electronic counterpart's ability to stick a class 6 in front of an express when he's got a loop right before the fringe!

Yes, at least the phone calls for trains only a few minutes early give you half an opportunity to manage the margins on his behalf - but once the freight's late, all bets are off and it's entirely likely to appear right in front of an express!

Yes, I've noticed this too and it gets a bit annoying. I'd like to see the cutoff set to half an hour ahead of scheduled arrival.

As I said above, it's the order of trains that matters, not the 'earlyness' of a single train in isolation. A freight coming into the area 29 minutes early, but in front of an express that it should be behind, can stuff you up far more than one that's 31 minutes early but in its booked path - the latter can just be held to time at the first junction if necessary, but there might be no way of getting the former out of the way. The same applies to those that enter just three or four minutes early at Clay Cross - right in front of the passenger that they should have been turned out immediately behind. Hopefully the update will resolve all of the above anyway! Log in to reply |
