It wasn't a bid; it was more in line with previous experience of voluntary organisations that unless someone puts their hand up early in the piece, we talk and talk and talk but no one actually does anything.

To update, I went to the Railway last week and couldn't manage to agree a deal with them. They wanted a minimum spend of £750. With the new stripped down no-buffet format that we tried last month in Derby, we would struggle to reach that level of spend. They wanted £200 deposit up front and would retain that deposit pound for pound if we didn't hit the spend (i.e. if we spent less than £550 they would retain the whole £200 and then for each £1 over £550 they would retain £1 less of the deposit until we hit the £750). So we would have to make an upfront charge of £6 or £7 just for the privilege of attending in order to cover the £200 deposit or have a risk of being out of pocket at the end of the day. With travel, food and drink on top of that, it didn't look a worthwhile deal.

I'm now following up various other options, but all of the pubs I've tried so far in London have a minimum spend level rather than just charging for the room hire offset against a deposit in the hundreds of pounds which makes it difficult. We may have to spread our wings a little further and look outside London.

Date is still set for 12th. March; because a number of people have already put that date in their diaries, it is not going to change now.

Update to follow in the next couple of weeks.

Searching uk.railway via Google Groups yields the earliest results from June 1999. The earliest homepage captured on the Internet Archive is from August 1999 [1]. Then, for a while there was SimSig.com, before finally moving to the familiar SimSig.co.uk address.

[1] Unfortunately the file download wasn't captured in the wayback machine, but I assume it was Fenchurch Street, which was resurrected for the loader by Clive a while ago .

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

I've finally managed to get things sorted and Geoff has given the seal of approval so we are good to go (and go outside London). Today I've been to the Wetherspoon's establishment the Soloman Cutler in Birmingham and reckon it looks excellent as a venue. It is about 10 minutes walk from New Street and probably about the same from Snow Hill or Moor Street. I've therefore taken the liberty of booking the venue for Saturday 12th. March. I'll put more information into the Meets section of the Wiki when I get time.

The pub has a very large (i.e. typical Wetherspoon) downstairs bar and a smaller upstairs bar. Running off the upstairs bar is an area which the pub will set aside for our meet. The picture below shows the area we would have. There is a bit more alcoved off on the left which is not in shot.

And this shot shows how far we are from the bar!

Further details in due course.

Re: the buses section...

It's almost certainly quicker to walk, but for those with limited mobility, the number 9 bus to Stourbridge departs from Colmore Row from just outside Snow Hill station and goes down Broad Street.

I'm less sure about New Street, but Google reports walking to the Alexandra Theatre allows you to get the 22 to Bartley Green.

Both of these stop either side of the Spoons in question.

EDIT: Hotels... For those who like a bit of novelty, I highly recommend BLOC, which is a small hotel chain specialising in modular rooms. They're small cubes with a double bed at one end and a shower/wet room built in. There's free Wifi, TVs offer full Freeview and aircon is fitted in all rooms - perfect to use as a place to lay your head. I've had a look and it's 75 quid for a room - not bad for a Saturday (but sadly about 30 quid more than I remember it...!)

The Wiki is a collective effort to take advantage of the huge range of knowledge and experience that we have amongst us. If anyone can add information of value or make any clarifications to the information already given about the upcoming meet, please share your knowledge and edit the page.

I wonder if something nice (ie. a new sim) will come out to coincide with the 10th Anniversary? I would hope so and can think of a couple of things on my wish list for 2016.

London Bridge is one, while Three Bridges is another. But we will have to wait and see: I am not in the know as to simulation release plans.

Trying to deliberately tie sim releases in with meets has never worked very well from the tester/developer side - and regardless it's 10 years of meets, SimSig has been around a lot longer.

I'm sure something will be organised game wise - I have a few ideas but having a good idea of numbers in advance, and people bring laptops they're willing to allow be used as part of the game are keys to planning a good meet multiplayer session. Derby had plenty of willing SimSignallers, unfortunately very few of them brought laptops with them.

That is of course if people still happy with me organising/planning meet sims...

Speaking as an end user, I'm extremely glad that someone is prepared to do that sort of stuff. Without someone putting their head above the parapet, we wouldn't have a meet so full respect to James.

Excellent! Barring unforeseen exigencies, I shall certainly come to this - it's been a while!

What type of booking/paying system do we use for meets these days?

Work in progress. The Wiki entry for the meet says:

Entrance Fee

The entrance fee is TBC.

If an entrance fee is charged, it will not be applied for those arriving after 2pm.

Definitely!

There is a major re-development at Paradise Circus at the City Centre end of Broad Street. The No.9 is diverted outbound and the nearest stop is now the National Indoor Arena, about 7 minutes walk. An easier route is to alight at Moor Street and walk though the Bull ring to stop NS6 (outside Debenhams) for the No. 22,23,24 or 29. This is also the nearest bus stop to New Street.

I've updated the Wiki Entry.

Peter.

There will be no entrance fee for this meet.

However, it would be good to have an idea about how many are likely to attend and also how many of those attending will be bringing laptops or other kit so that we can set up the multiplay. If you are planning to attend, could you please fill in this form.
