Windows: size and position 26/02/2016 at 18:19 #80875

I use SimSig on my laptop with an additional monitor plugged in. The screens are arranged vertically with the additional one above the laptop screen.

Every time I load a sim I have to rearrange all the various windows to get them into my preferred positions: the main view I drag onto the lower portion of the upper screen where it gets resized to full width and enough height to remove the vertical scroll bar; the messages and control windows go above that window. The F2 train list goes on the main laptop screen, maximised, & the train details window gets moved up over the main view when used. I rarely use the overview.

Would it be feasible for the program to save the positions and sizes of all the windows on a per-sim basis so they can be restored automatically to the preferred position the next time the sim is loaded?

It can be done, yes, but needs more thought if, for example, you don't have the second screen plugged in when re-loading, or you give the save file to somebody else with a different screen setup.

That's easy: if it can't place the windows on the saved position then they are placed on their default location. I highly suport this sugestion.

Easy from a discussion point of view yes, easy from a coding perspective? Perhaps not so much.

On a similar topic, has there been any thought given to changing the default window positions slightly for Windows 10, to take account of the lack of window borders?

It was raised in our issue tracker as #13952. Will take a look on my Win10 machine at some point.

Well, if Windows can't find a monitor it tends to just slap the associated windows anywhere it sees fit on the remaining display(s), which would be fine

My experience of this is that only the menu window gets relocated to the main screen, not the message screen or the view screen

It would be great to be able to save the open state and position of the additional screens as well.
I'm just learning Cardiff Valleys for which it's useful to have 2 ground frames and the train list open permanently.
