I don't know if filming trains at railway stations is allowed because people keep staring at me and I felt like I was going to get arrested for trespassing the railway.

You know that red sign that says if u trespass the railway = £1000 fine.

The Network Rail guidelines for Rail Enthusiasts are online at http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/777.aspx. They certainly allow for photography although filming is not mentioned. It is always handy having a print-out in your pocket (or the URL to hand for your smartphone) to assist jobsworths in carrying out their duties correctly.

I belive you have to obtain permission to film at rail stations in the uk, permission would need to come from the TOC who manage the station in question.

I have found this page at Network Rail tha may help, and also this post

I think that's related to commercial filming- as far as I'm aware, there's no problem with turning up and pointing a camcorder at trains.

The main restrictions are no flash photography and don't set up tripods anywhere that's likely to be busy.

In short, provided that you aren't in people's way, stay behind the yellow line and don't go past the signs at the end of the platform you're generally OK for enthusiast related photography and filming. If you're staying a long time, it's advisable to tell the station staff who may ask you to sign the visitor book.

There is information in them about non-commercial filming, the second link was on a forum where the user asked about non-commercial filming and it was answered by NR which also points to the first link I provided, the main advice given in them for non-commercial and commercial filming is to contact NR or TOC's and seek permission and/or advice.

When I'm at Pontefract Monkhill railway station (since its the closest to my college), I find that people will look at me and I bet they are thinking "What are you doing?". That is what I find a bit nervous about.

Most people think train spotters are weird, you just have to come to terms with that and carry on regardless!

It only becomes trespassing if you were to jump down onto the ramp or track-quite simply "trespassing" is defined as going into non-public areas.

Such a pleasant change when an OP acknowledges the time and effort other people have put in to try and answer a query. Shout out for Vortexhaha.

The last time I visited family in the South East of France in 2004 I was taking some photos of trains at the towns station & this woman in railway uniform started shouting at me & came across the running lines to tell me taking photos was not allowed. It would appear that after the terrorist action on 9/11 all this sort of thing over there became a big no no. However when I was taking some phgotos of trains at Calais during my journey to Annecy no one batted an eyelid. Certainly after 9/11 things changed. When I was Trainsmaster at Bescot anyone wishing to take photos of trains there away from the public areas were generally escorted by me or someone else. Train spotters or rail enthusiasts as someone mentioned earlier are looked on as weird whereas in other countries in the world such as the USA it's totally different.

I've not had any issues filming at Railways Station until a month or so ago. As you may or not know I work with Northern as a Train Cleaner Technician where I'm found in Blackpool North Car.M.D. and Preston C.S./Croft Street and also a temporary Leyland B Leyland former Leyland British Cars ect. Never had any problems with the Staff at Preston they all know me likewise I know them so everything is all ok.

I was at Preston a month ago where I was doing an All Night filming/photoing of all freight and sleeper trains and meeting up with a few fellow train drivers. On the morning I had a jobsworth shouting at me saying you shouldn't be filming or taking pictures of the trains it's again the rules.. Rather snotty person!. I gently reminded him about the rules and reg and also mentioned I work here... The reply was Oh Oh sorry about that continue.

Yes, "foamers" (=rail fans) are not considered that unusual here.

Taking pictures of trains in the US is a bit hit and miss in terms of harassment. From public areas (highways, parks etc) you ought to be fine but that hasn't stopped some railway police from quizzing the photographers. If you're on railway property - which can extend 50ft either side of the line if not explicitly marked (most US railway lines are not fenced) - you're on their territory and you play by their rules. Most are fine with it. Some twitchy railway police are not.
