I'm not from the south so don't notice what goes on when the LU goes on strike but I've had a look at it today and noticed that no trains run to Moorgate via Drayton Park. Instead these are diverted to Kings Cross.

Has this been recreated in a Kings Cross Timetable on Simsig? I'd love to give it a go if so.

The reason the Great Northern trains can't serve Moorgate during the strike is that Moorgate is an Underground station, which is closed. The Finsbury Park to Moorgate section used to be part of the Northern Line.

Northern City line, not to be confused with the Northern Line.

Actually, to be confused with the Northern Line.

The line was built as the Great Northern & City Line, so called because it was originally intended to carry trains from the mainline station at Finsbury Park off the GNR into the City (i.e. what it does now). However, for various reasons it instead was built with tube platforms at Finsbury Park.

It was bought out by the Metropolitan Railway on 1913-07-01 and therefore became part of the MR and, in due course, the Metropolitan Line.

Shortly after London Transport was formed it was transferred to the Northern Line, where it was sometimes known as the "Northern City Line" or the "Highbury Branch". It was never a separate Line in the way that, for example, the Victoria Line is.

See my web site for more details.

As I'm sure Clive's website alludes (I've not read it for some time), there was until 1970 a physical connection to Highgate depot. Passenger services had ceased that way some time before with the demise of the Northern Heights plan. The intended plans were rather vast.

(Tangent 1: These closures basically starved the area between Highgate and Finsbury Park of a rail connection to town, and now one of the most frequent buses in London - the W7 - runs from Muswell Hill to Finsbury (34 buses scheduled between 0700-0900).

Tangent 2: The trackbed was also formed to Edgware via Mill Hill but track never laid all the way - before the M1 continued to Brent Cross there was a temporary slip road along the intended trackbed to the local road network.)

That would surprise this driver at Edgware!

The track *was* laid all the way. The line was originally the GNR branch from Finsbury Park to Edgware, with later sub-branches to Alexandra Palace and High Barnet. The *fourth rail* was only laid as far as Mill Hill East. It was single track between Finchley Central and Edgware, though later doubled to Mill Hill East (and then singled again!).

The last passenger train between Edgware and Finchley Central was 1939-09-10, but the line remained open for goods traffic until 1964. LNER season ticket holders at Edgware and Mill Hill (The Hale) were entitled to use LT buses on the parallel route for many years.

Bah! Thanks for correcting me Clive. I knew I'd be wrong somewhere. I should have known that as I used to live near Finchley Central, where there was once (maybe still) some great photos of goods trains from a similar era to the photo you posted.
