I have been looking forward to this simulation since it was released, coming from Bargoed and all that. I have started playing and I love it so far.

In the manual it is mentioned that there was a query over how the token was released. Trains coming down from Rhymney would stop at the end of the down platform, blocking the crossover and the signalman would would stand by the driver's window. For trains to Rhymney he would walk across the tracks to the up platform and hand the driver the token, before walking back to the box and releasing the signal.

Also I noticed a spelling mistake in the overview of the Rhymney valley section.

Thank you for reading the manual!

What year was this method used? Again I've got a lot of conflicting information but nothing definite. Anything to narrow it down would be a help.

"Passengers for New Lane, should be seated in the rear coach of the train " - Opinions are my own and not those of my employer

This method was used until the closure of the signal box, which I believe was 2 years ago....not sure of exact dates. What I do know, is that there wasn't any token machines on the platforms. My father also confirmed this thought, seeing as he still lives in Bargoed(I have spent the last 6 months working on the Isle of Wight).

The family house is just above the viaduct and we used to stand on the old B&M trackbed and watch all the action from what used to be North Junction. We could almost tell the time from hearing the 37's leaving for Rhymney in the evening.

The wooden signalbox at Bargoed was originally at Cymmer Afan. As I understand it the box was opened at Cymmer Afan on 17-Jun-1960 but only lasted just over 10 years before being closed 24-Aug-1970. From Cymmer Afan the box was transferred to Bargoed where it reopened (in effect) on 09-Nov-1970. It was abolished at Bargoed after the passage of the last train on 06-Sep-2013.

I do not know if the frame also came from Cymmer Afan with the box. I called at Bargoed a couple of days prior to its closure and was told by the signalman that the frame had 35 levers of which 13 were spare.

Interestingly the "South Wales (Part 3)" book (British Railways Past & Present, Volume 37) has, on page 42, a "past" photo of Cymmer Afan station showing the boxes built by the R&SBR and GWR (they had their own stations adjacent to each other) and also shows, next to the GWR one, the box that was opened in June 1960.

HTIOI,
Dave

I have finally found evidence for what I believed to be true, Tirphil loop is fully signalled - Tirphil loop came into use with the changeover from Bargoed to Cardiff control.

This is the signal to the section between Tirphil and Brithdir.

Now all that is needed is the long-planned increase in frequency from BGD to RHY, whenever that happens.

I have found some pictures of Bargoed in it's closing days as a blockpost. It came to mind last night that Rhymney was a block post, pretty much as simulated. My father once got invited into the 'box at Bargoed and was told that the Rhymney line was treated as OTW most of the time, unless it was a train going to or from the sidings, in which case there was a Electric Token machine in the sidings.

I am not sure if trains at Rhymney rang in to confirm their arrival and my suspicion is that tokens were only taken out for trains coming from the sidings.

I hope that is actually helpful and doesn't add more confusion.
