ARS 'Scenic Routing' upgrade 01/04/2017 at 10:32 #94245

A key selling point of rail travel is that it's often the most environmentally friendly mode of transport for a given journey. To enable passengers to appreciate their contribution, the latest ARS specifications include a bias for 'scenic routing'. This follows on from the highly successful routing standards for IP packets, as detailed in RFC 7511.

Under this scheme, as well as aiming to minimise overall delay (or, at least, any delay to Thameslink services), ARS will, wherever possible, attempt to select routes which are considered more visually amenable. The algorithm places high value on viaducts, sea views, rolling hills, and children waving hankies from the boundary fence. All trains, if possible, will be routed to pass any 'Flying Scotsman' railtour. In urban environments, tracks closest to the many buddleia bushes specially planted and maintained by Network Rail's Green Railway program will be preferred.

Trials at West Midlands ROC have shown up several deficiencies, however. Manual override is required to get any train within a mile of Birmingham New Street, as the algorithm prefers to direct trains to Moor Street instead. Furthermore, the system has classed the line beyond Barnt Green to Redditch as 'extremely scenic', and currently refuses to let trains onto the single line until it is confirmed that all on board are over the age of 16.

Would it be possible for these upgrades to be reflected in SimSig in due course?

Sounds like the early versions of ITPS* - though I don't think that was released on April 1st!

* For those that don't know, ITPS was Network Rail's new timetable planning tool numerous years ago, which had a habit of scheduling trains in rather bizarre, circuitous, and long winded ways. True voyages of discovery. There was one example of a schedule from Wembley Yard to Bletchley which should have been a straight run up the West Coast but instead was routed towards London, up the Midland Main Line, west through Birmingham somehow, and back down to Bletchley. An exercise for the reader to work out the routing without reversals.

How do you propose NLL->MML? Willesden Jn -> Kensal Green Jn -> ???

Hmm, either instead via the WLL - Factory Jn - Loughborough Jn - Thameslink - MML, or else NLL - Lea Jn - Temple Mills East Jn - South Tottenham - Junction Road Jn - MML.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Having seen very few even faintly amusing April Fool stories this year, I enjoyed this one.

It has been reported overnight that the new ARS spec. now requires a manual override at Kings Cross as the system routes everything to Platform 9 3/4.

There is a post (comment) at the bottom that says "April Fools" but that was NOT posted by the author of the blog

Another good one I saw was a picture of workmen at Stonehenge re-aligning the stones to suit British Summer time.....

Does this only apply to trains with the headcode 2R43?

I don't know why you've tossed that into the conversation.

But it's in my own hands.

Reason: This says optional so why do I have to provide a reason?
