I was recently looking at platform lengths so that I could check a few things on my new TT and I'm a little confused about why Platform 7 is not listed as a platform that the Eurostar may use (GNER era only).

I only ask because of this quote suggesting that Platforms 6 and 7 are the same length:

Platforms 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be shortened by an overall length of 11.9 metres each.

Platform 5 will be reduced in length from 288m to 276.10m
Platform 6 will be reduced in length from 297m to 285.10m

Platform 8 will be reduced in length from 289m to 277.10m
This is part of a Q&A section on the First Capital Connect website regarding the Kings Cross upgrades.

And also, while on the subject of said upgrades; will there be an update in the future (once the works are complete) allowing for the addition of the new platform next to Platform 1 in a seperate era to the one that we are in at the moment?

Section 5.4 of the Rules of the Plan will assist you with the current lengths.

I have a request in for an older layout option so it maybe possible to do a newer layout at the same time which might include the TL link-line. Have added your suggestion to the KX 'things to think about' list.

That quote is talking about the actual platform lengths: 6 and 7 are opposite sides of the same "finger" and so are the same length.

However, the starting signals aren't in the same place. While a Eurostar Regional could have fitted into platform 7 with all doors on the platform (because the length is the same), the driving cab would have been beyond the starting signal.

While having a look through that document I found some very interesting things out. Like that, at one point the NoL Eurostar was going to stop at a set list of places (were given slots in the WTT even though they were never used) and Peterborough was listed as one of the stops with a maximum platform length of 259 metres; 61 metres shorter than the required amount. I think some people need to check their WTTs.

The GNERostars *did* stop at Peterborough. They had selective door enable, so it was possible to tell people to walk through to coaches on the platforms. But that couldn't be done at King's Cross because of the layout.

Saw one do a scheduled stop at Stevenage- it was during engineering work and there was a special timetable in operation.

I am contemplating doing a 50's/60's steam timetable for KX (actually a revamp of a ttable I did for another sim). Whilst still trying to figure out the logic behind many loco changes and loss of some (well a lot really) running lines how far back in time would your 'older' layout be. Presumably not as far back as this era but anything I should be in mind if and when I get started.

I was just envisigaing some tweaks to bring back some of the stuff removed since the current shape was born in 1977 and the box was opened.

Going back further, while not impossible, would require a major rebuild I guess and we don't necessarily have the data though I do have the layout in the relevant Modern railways magazine.

Is that the one entitled 'The Throat'? I found that on the Trainz forum. I can't locate anything showing the track diagrams of Top Shed or Hornsey depot so will have to adjust to what we've got and hope for the best!

I've got a mid-80s book somewhere called "LNER 150" with a plan of Top Shed in it. Presumably, though, the shed trackplan wouldn't really be relevant to the sim.

Going back to the 1920s layout with American-style 3-aspect semaphores, and only 2 main-line departure platforms, would be interesting - although possibly a step *too* far back!

Perhaps you can answer my question which is all I really wanted to know is did Top Shed have an entrance/exit at both ends? If so I 'could' replicate locos coming/going from KX Goods and also Clarence Yard. Now.....if Peter were to put an entrance/exit point to/from Holloway North at sig 40 that would be even better!

KX is not one of my Sims; I was just agreeing that some of your suggestions were worth considering in the future by whomever did any work on it.

While on the subject, when Kurt (i believe it is) next works on this. It would be nice to have Belle Isle added as a timing point as it is a compulsory timing point for all trains departing from KingsX.

The plan doesn't show enough of the surrounding area, though, to show exactly how it fitted in to the local geography.

I wonder if the confusion about Clarence Yard is that a diesel depot was built there in (I believe) the early '60s, this being where the Deltics (inter alia) were maintained. I'm not sure whether Clarence Yard & Top Shed were ever in use simultaneously as loco facilities but I guess the connections were in place for a good while and may have been used for other purposes.

Yes; that was Finsbury Park shed, open from 1960-83; the lifespan of the shed was tied very closely to the Deltics themselves. I think Top Shed closed in about '63.
