The displayed overlap for the route from 333 to 803 extends all the way to 811, but occupying the last track circuit within the overlap (T803BT) doesn't seem to have any influence on the aspect displayed by 333.
The same thing is observable in the opposite direction as well for the route from 338 to 332, where the occupation of T332BT at the end of the overlap doesn't seem to affect anything.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

In Australia, some overlap tracks can be occupied.

I'll leave the team to comment if it applies in these specific instances.

333 doesn't have a low speed but checking the track plans, it looks like the shorter overlap is supposed to be conditional (approach controlled in simple terms). Like Karl, I'll wait for the experts to confirm.

Generally though:
- First part of overlap is required to be clear
- Second part can be occupied but will result in a more restrictive aspect like low speed, or be approach controlled
- Third part is locked but no track detection necessary
Most only have a simple overlap, like the 1st part. Downhill over conflicting junctions and the 2nd/3rd parts, combined with multi-signal-block overlaps really kick in and you need to start planning a mission to Mars as the overlap is longer than the route and locks up from here to eternity...

Sorry, I've only just seen this.

From memory, the scenario you describe should return the signal to stop, where it will sit in an approach-controlled state until the overlap clears. With that said, it was rare to see more than one train at a time on this portion of track. Only really happened during the busiest special events at Olympic Park.

I'll have a closer look when I get a chance.
