The clearing points as modelled on the sim at peak forest and Great rocks only extend to the signal itself effectively. I know the line is predominentely freight only but given the steep gradients and heavy trains involved surely the clearing point should extend at least over the pointwork around 45/28 signals and across the crossovers at great rocks?

I can't think of any reason why it should, given that this is signalled as a freight line. The clearing point is whatever the Block Regs (as modified by the SBSIs) says it is, however counterintuitive that might be. In any case the only reason we have the concept of a clearing point is because of the Inspecting Officer's comments in the Abbotts Ripton report. If the truth be told, that particular factor had very little to do with the accident, which in all likelihood would never have happened if the signals had not frozen in the clear position. So although his complaint about the safety margin ("...the thickness, so to speak, of the signal post..."had huge consequences for the development of signalling in the UK, there's no fundamental reason it has to be built in to the system.
