Crofton level crossing — is it still there? 24/05/2019 at 21:05 #118453

I just happened to glance at my Eastern Quail map (2016 edition), and I've noticed that Crofton Old Station LC is just marked on there as a UWC; no crossing box is in sight. Is Crofton Old Station LC actually still there as a "proper" crossing or has it really been downgraded to a user-worked crossing? If it's not still there, should there be an era option to remove it?

According to the RAIB report linked below, it's gone back and forth between UWC and MCG several times. Until 1994 it was MCG during the day and UWC at night. It was downgraded to UWC until 2002 after the depot was brought back into use by Bombardier, when it was made a full-time MCG crossing. As of 2006, interlocking was installed between the gates and the signalling.

The situation may have changed again since then, but the photo also linked below still shows the crossing keeper's cabin in situ in March 2019, and the caption mentions that "three trains passed before the gates opened", implying a crossing keeper.

The report also states that the practise of the signaller calling to request that the gates are closed only began in 2006; before then, the gates were normally closed to road traffic. Similarly, the interlocking between the gates and signalling was only added in late 2006.
