The manual for Exeter states:

Quote:
Eggesford has been provided with ARS because there are no signals there in real life, and drivers collect a token from a machine on the platform, which is released from Crediton signal box. To simulate this, the repeaters are fixed at caution, and the signals will only release when the train approaches.
Is it possible to expand on this a bit.

My limited understanding of the working from Crediton -- Barnstaple is:

No Signaller Token Remote (NSTR) regulations are in force.

I gather at Crediton the driver collects a token from the signaller at Crediton, which is authority to proceed to Eggesford.

On arrival at Eggesford the driver phones the Crediton signaller, reports they've arrived complete with tail lamp and requests permission to replace the token in the machine at Eggesford. They will then ring for permission to withdraw a token for the line to Barnstaple. The signaller at Crediton will then grant permission and release a token if they're able.

Driver rings on arrival at Barnstaple and then again on departure.

Rinse and repeat with the driver ringing the Crediton signaller on arrival at Eggesford for permission to return the token and then withdraw a token for Eggesford -- Crediton. They will then return the token to the signaller at Crediton.

I gather signalling is in the form of fixed distant boards and I guess some kind of points indicator. Points are train operated I take it?

The Crediton signaller keeps track of train movements using a simple magnetic board I gather.

Is that more or less the extent of it? Can anyone help me with anywhere I may have gone wrong, or anything I may have left out?

Yes although there is a level crossing on the crediton side of Eggesford which is activated by the driver pressing a plunger then checking the barriers are down and the crossing is clear before proceeding.

Thank you!

Every little detail helps :)

And so Eggesford to Barnstaple that's also operated by a token, even though it's a dead-end?

I mean I was just wondering why it isn't a OTW line as in the sim, perhaps with train staff instead of going to the trouble of having a token machine

One reason is that there's two instruments at Eggesford, a "pick up" on the north bound platform, and a "Drop off" on the south bound platform. This saves the driver a long walk to swap the train staff.

Another reason I think (Stephen Fulcher can confirm if it was ever the case, or intended) is that you used to be able to lock in at Barnstaple, with another instrument there.

definitely used to be able to as a parcels van or two got left there. not sure about currently. the other reason a token would've been required is to unlock the points into the RR loop at Barnstaple back when the line was worked by 31's on loco hauled stock.

I suspect If Exeter was a new sim produced from scratch today it would've been simulated with more "modern" methods like in Cardiff Valleys for instance but why fix what isn't broken.

I was heavily involved in repairing the fire damage earlier this year at Eggesford where the Down Platform Token Hut was destroyed.

There are three instruments in the Crediton to Eggesford Section, one located in the signal box at Crediton, and one on each platform at Eggesford. They are connected by Reed FDM circuits over phone lines. For a train running from Crediton to Eggesford, the Signaller releases a token from the instrument in the box, and this unlocks the Section Signal. The driver then collects the token when the train passes the box. Upon arrival at Eggesford he phones the box to replace the token in the Down side hut and if the line to Barnstaple is clear the Signaller will authorise him to take the token for the section to Barnstaple. Once the Driver confirms the TPWS blue light is flashing (indicating TPWS suppressed) the Signaller will authorise the train to pass the Stop Board and enter the section.

Trains going the other way drop the Barnstaple to Eggesford token in the Up platform hut and collect an Eggesford to Crediton token which is surrendered to the Signaller as the train passes the box.

There are still ground frames at Barnstaple released by the token, but no longer any shut in facilities .

Exeter was completely rebuilt by me not so long ago. However, the Barnstaple part was not included simply because I do not have sufficient information.

Daft question time now, simply out of curiosity.

Since (for example) the down trains to Barnstaple all take their tokens out of the down hut, but surrender their tokens in the up hut, presumably at some point the tokens must somehow make their way back to the down hut, otherwise they'd eventually run out and the driver would have to walk over to the other platforn? Equally this must also happen for the eggesford-crediton tokens as well?

There's magazines fitted to each token machine which tokens are "dropped off in" (or used to be before the fire last year not sure if they survived).

These are then used to transport a bulk amount of tokens between machines.

Transfer magazines make things hugely easier. If there's no magazine, the Sleep & Tea have to come out every so often and transfer a load of tokens. Where it's an imbalance that builds up at one end of a section, the tokens they remove are put in a special bag and the instruments are left 'in phase' so a token can be withdrawn for the train that will take them through the section. I can't imagine a bag of that kind being used at Eggesford, but the principle is the same.

Certainly shortly after the fire it was being done without magazines as they'd become some what warped in the heat. I think S&T had to go three or four times a week!

I happened to ask a driver I know about this a couple of months ago. You use the same token from Eggesford to Barnstaple and back.
