In the Edinburgh sim, the timetable has the Highland sleeper join taking place on the long straight platform on the south side (Platform 10 and 11 in the sim, Platform 7 and 11 after the re-numbering). Now, it seems as if they are using the north side platforms, Platforms 19 and 2, formerly numbered as Platforms 19 and 1.

Has anyone in the know any ideas of the reason for this change?

Also, the join / unjoin do not seem to going to plan. I note that it is rare for all three southbound portions to arrive at Waverley on time. However, the join always then seems to over-run, by 20 to 40 minutes, and the train often departs for Euston 40 or more minutes down. It's hard to make that up for an on-time arrival in Euston.

The default for years and years has been for the sleeper shunts at the Waverley to use the north side, with the south side only being used if there’s disruption or due to possessions/isolations etc.. I can’t speak for why it’s timetabled for the south side in the sim.

Don't quote me on this, but since the new X/O has been commissioned between 11 & 10 and signals moved, That E471 is now further back onto the platform (in line with E467, but both now on an overhead gantry)... leaving limited clearance at the 11/10/7 crossover. The North side has been used before the new crossover was commissioned, but now seems the standard procedure now, regardless of what data can be openly found in the public domain regarding platform numbers (i.e RTT, OTT still stating 10,11,7 side of the station)

Platform 2 is longer than 7.

B16 arrives first, propels the coaches onto M16 when it arrives, loco ties off and heads to Craigy. M16 goes into 19, loco ties off and becomes 0B17 to Craigy (Before 0B16). 0M16 then proceeds out of 20 and ties on to 1M16 at the country end of 19. B01 then comes in through 20/1 and Calton tunnels to propels onto the end of M16. Tonight looking to depart RT from EDB.

Hap - thanks for the full reply. I'd forgotten about the new crossover at the end of Platform 11.

Watching the shunts just now, it seems that the coaches that make 1A25 are at the front of the rake..0A25 shunts into 19/2 and draws forward into 19. 0S25 then heads into 2 and takes 1S25, leaving 1Y11 and the normal 2 coaches waiting to be attached and then head up to FTW.

This must be the new system to rotate the coaches. Until I can get the diagrams, I can only stipulate what's happening on RTT and from sight when in Waverley.

The order of the portions was reversed when the new coaches started on the Highlander to allow the sets to rotate for maintenance through Wembley rather than Polmadie. However this has led to some pretty significant delays (though there are other factors at play too) and various different options, such as shunting the Fort William day coaches using the class 92 off 1S25, are currently being trialled to try and see if the situation can be improved. It’s all still a bit up in the air at the moment and there’s talk of the portions going possibly back to the previous formation as with the Mk3s. I could post the detailed planned shunting moves for the Mk5 sets if anyone is interested but it’d take me a while to write up because there are a few variations.

Perhaps once things have settled down so there aren't the variations?

I have just returned from a meeting of CRAG (Capital Rail Action Group) and understand from a source better informed than I am that the matter of the over-running join and split is a matter of concern, but without any immediate solution. Watch this space!
