13) The Sussex pub in Devon (10,4): Portsmouth Arms

Do not understand how you get this answer? Portsmouth is in Hampshire.

Thanks for the seasonal mindstretch.

Sorry to spoil it for 32, but I have always understood it to be pronounced Ardgy, as in sty, and not Ardgay, as in hay.

Well you live and learn. Re-write the clue as "Sounds like a cockney bruiser".

Is that like the people who make a big noise about coming from the North when they are so far South they are only halfway between London and the Border. North Midlands at best.

London to Independent Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire 160 mile - ISRoSY to Geordieland 108 mile = definitely not halfway

Hadrian got lost when he built the wall - It should have run from Carlisle to Teeside

For those whose knowledge of geography only extends as far as the Midlands, Newcastle is about 65 miles from the Scottish border just North of Marshall Meadows near Berwick. I think the sum should read:

London to Independent Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire 160 mile - ISRoSY to the end of England 173 mile = definitely not even halfway.

lets solve this in railway terms. we're all (poorly) served by NORTHERN rail from Sheffield (technically Nottingham) all the way up to Chathill, from Liverpool to Hull and Cleethorpes, and from Crewe to Carlisle.

ergo anything south of South Yorkshire is the Midlands.

we're all northerners. the accent just gets less intelligible and fewer layers of clothing are worn in colder weather as you progress further north.

What I would say is thank you to Postal for the enjoyment this has brought to everyone even if there was one small error and can we now lock this thread as it is getting rather silly and has run it’s course.

I second that - thanks John for both the quiz and the opportunity for a little Xmas banter.

Now go wrap up warm as we all know its colder up there, wouldnt want you catching anything nasty from over the border.
