A friend of mine's father-in-law recently found an old signal ID plate that he thought he'd lost somewhere in his garden. He says that he "relieved" it from a heap of scrap metal at Old Oak Common back in the late-60s when poking around as a kid.

He wants to know which area the plate had originally come from. The plate ID is WE110. I know that until 1968, there was a West Ealing panel on the GWML which had the code WE. I'm going to assume that's where it came from, given its proximity to OOC. Also, does anyone know which exact signal WE110 would have been back then? Also, does anyone happen to have, or know where one can find, a diagram of the old West Ealing signalbox? The internet isn't being very cooperative.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was a WE110, it became OO40 which was between West Ealing and Hanwell on the Down Main.

The s-r-s is an amazing source of information, and they do have some very interesting signalling notices related to West Ealing, including a thorough description of how the box worked. These are all easily available here:

Sadly, there do not seem to be any diagrams of the relevant area before West Ealing closed.

Thanks for all this info. I don't suppose you know which signal OO40 went on to become with the advent of Slough New signalbox do you? Would the signal have remained in the same place, and be there now?

EDIT - the signal currently occupying the general position of WE110/OO40 these days is SN231. Would it have more or less been where SN231 is now?

The National Archives might have a West Ealing diagram. The catalogue entry is nondescript about what this may contain, this series of files are very much a lucky dip. I'll order up the document for my next visit. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2358169

(Note: although these files are in the GWR series, they also seem to have BR-era materials included within).

Whereas the notice regarding West Ealing going into Old Oak Common power box explicitly says:

It is not so clear regarding Slough New:

Judging by the mile posts indicated on the plans, I would say you're right and SN231 is more-or-less an exact equivalent of the old OO40.
