Each night, I save my position and put my PC (Windows 10 v1909) in hibernation (it's rare that I'm not in the middle of a simulation). Every morning since the upgrade, I receive the message "Licence has been removed from this machine. Simulation will now end". It takes a second or two for the wifi to reconnect on wake-up, and I think the loader is timing out too quickly. It's only a minor annoyance, given that V5 is quicker than V4 at loading. I'm not suprised that people hybernate rather than shut down but I am suprised programs are left open overnight.

I use 'sleep' on my PC which has the same issue. It shuts down and loads much faster and is designed for picking up where I left off. Although I wouldn't leave anything overly resource-hungry running whilst it sleeps, browser and explorer windows and simple apps are exactly what it's designed for, so it's a little frustrating that SimSig is now incompatible with this feature, especially as one of the reasons I leave it open is so I don't need to resize all my windows every time I restart.

On a personal note, I'm surprised how many people shut down their PCs. Since hibernation first became possible (I never had Windows 95, but it was possible with NT 4 in 1997), I have always hibernated my PC, only rebooting when forced to by software updates. In the days before SSD, this saved at least 5 minutes a day, so almost a working week par year (I normally connect to work 365 days per year). I would say that I've not had more than one problem a year due to applications not recovering properly. Even the occasional time when I forget to save a file it's usually possible to save it after waking up. Log in to reply |

I might add that for the majority of people, shutting down Windows 10 does not actually shut it down in the accepted sense of pre-Windows 10 "shutdown" see https://www.howtogeek.com/349114/shutting-down-doesnt-fully-shut-down-windows-10-but-restarting-it-does/ for more info Log in to reply |

With the older machines using sleep mode saves 5-10 minutes on returning. something you usually want if your not planning to do something that will take a long time anyways. This is how ive always done it with my laptop as i experience problems with chrome when i close it losing all the pages i had open ocasionally.

I've just woken my machine from sleep overnight and lost my Birmingham New Street simulation which had reached 0553 which was a little disappointing as I only hourly save. I'll know now not to leave Simsig running. Overall I am delighted with the V5 changes, well done to all involved. Log in to reply |

I'll know now not to leave Simsig running.I'd suggest that you reduce you save settings, to say every 10/15/20 mins instead of an hour the save files will vary between 150-250KB per save, hardly taxing for most systems these days Passed the age to be doing 'Spoon Feeding' !!!
