I understood the interlocking of auto signals,it was the reporting of an auto signal aspect to the signaller I was questioning (perhaps I should have made that clearer). So does this mean that in an IECC area, auto signal aspects shown on a display screen are true or assumed ?
Broadly speaking, in relay areas, auto signal interlocking is done lineside, in the grey boxes near signals. Only a handful of relays are required. Track sections are repeated back to the box but the signal aspect is not. It's costly to run cable from each signal back to the nearest relay room to transmit the aspect back to the box.

In SSI (or other CBI) areas, the interlocking is in the signal box, so the auto signals are driven by the signal box and thus easy to show their actual aspect on a screen. The commands are sent trackside via a serial or multiplex link, so cabling is pretty cheap.

As to your exact question, well some IECCs control relay areas so the aspect is either not shown or, more commonly, is calculated and shown ("if next signal is red and I'm getting an 'off' indication for the preceding auto, then that auto is most likely showing single yellow").

Simplified somewhat, of course.
