I do admire your summaries of this stuff Clive. My partner earned himself a very comfortable living teaching this stuff for many years, and it is complicated!!
Thank you. I do try to get it right: I do have an LL.M.(Edin) in this stuff and used to teach it a bit myself, though it didn't pay very much.

See here for my essays and dissertation (which involves railways).
Blimey. Good thing he's retired, or he'd spend the next month rewriting his lectures to put this in. Especially the signalling stuff. (Tim always loved giving the students real life stuff. One of his tutorials included stuff on the Gardner diesel engine we have in the boat, taken from the user manual. They loved it!)

Must say I enjoyed reading that. I’m also impressed that you managed to get a bibliographic reference to a Terry Pratchett book into an academic work!

<snicker> Yes, that was the best one. I'm impressed that you found it; too many people skip the footnotes.

The other essays include a reference to a Heinlein novel, to a short story by Christopher Anvil, and to "Yes Minister", all on topic. I also managed to sneak in a nod to Fermat's Last Theorem. Oh, and the Free Beer Foundation.

It wouldn't happen to be a solution by any chance?

It would have been, but the margin was too narrow to contain it.

(For the record, a proof was published by Andrew Wiles in 1994).

"Don't stress/ relax/ let life roll off your backs./ Except for death and paying taxes/ everything in life.../ is only for now." (Avenue Q)

Was that the free beer or Fermat ?

Either could be affected by narrow margins

Got to be Fermats - I don't like beer

No.

(It was simply "This footnote is too small to explain …".)

Oh, just found "[11] The interested reader is directed to the works of J.le Carré, F.Forsyth, and T.Clancy for further details." in another essay.
