Greetings all,

I am not trying to rejuvenate the discussion about the accident at Stonehaven from earlier this year, and all the business surrounding it, but I thought I would share this.

Network Rail (Scotland) have said on the rule changes for their Timetable Planning Regulations for 2022 that train code 1T08 is "not to be used as a reporting number on the Scotland route" as per the attached image. Presumably this takes effect when the May 2022 timetable kicks in. The document containing this rule change can be downloaded from Network Rail's website at https://www.networkrail.co.uk/industry-and-commercial/information-for-operators/operational-rules/ => TPR 2022. That downloads a ZIP file and it is in a PDF file therein.

Hope I haven't done something wrong by posting this: apologies if I have.
Dave

No harm in posting this. Personally I think it's quite an honourable, respectful touch!
Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait!

Perfectly happy to see this, and glad I won't have to see or work under that headcode again. It seems the feeling is mutual amongst my colleagues.

Is there a precedent for this sort of thing or is this a first?

Airlines have often done it for flight numbers involved in fatal accidents, though I'm not sure headcodes have been retired before.

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

The only thing I can think of that's similar is when 91023 was renumbered to 91132 following its overhaul in the mid 2000s (the rest of the fleet simply had 100 added to the old number); the reason being that it was 'pushing' at both Hatfield and Great Heck.

I vaguely remember reading about a diesel loco that was re-numbered following a string of incidents, but I can't remember any details.

I know that the crossover at Potters Bar was left out of use for some time after it was repaired because the families of the victims hadn't been told it was going to be used again.
