F3 (Options)-> Messages tab-> Select 'Level Crossing clear' from the drop-down list.

No that did not work
C:\Users\Public\Documents\SimSig\The Floriston Barriers are down.wav

Simplified it to
C:\Users\Public\Documents\SimSig\barriers.wav
All I get is a Windows ding

Make sure 'Play Sound' is ticked and 'Disable' unticked. If that still doesn't work, try re-naming the file so it doesn't have spaces.

(Note that these preferences are saved across all simulations).

Checked that, no difference
Compared with MP3 and WAV, no difference

Not sure what's causing that then- I've dropped a .WAV file in the same location you have and it works fine.

Just to check- if you play the sound file directly, does it play what you expect?

Yes, is there a time limit on the sound?
When I select the other defaults I am given a sample sound (TRS platwhistle tel)
When I select these I receive the Windows Ding, as if it does not like it

I have temporarily swapped it to a
PopUp Message Box

There must be some way to do this...

What type of WAV file
I have loads, but these are Text to WAV conversions, although it should not make any difference as they are still WAV files

I don't know if there's a limit, but I tried a 22 second test sound and that worked fine- is your sound longer?

What happens if you select it, then drop the barriers? Correct sound, Windows ding or no sound?

Out of interest, what's the file size? That's the only other thing I can think of that would be causing SimSig to reject it.

2 second 40KB
Opened and tested in Windows Media "The Floriston Barriers are down"

I have set the barriers to manual
UP Down Up Down Up Down
When they are down all I get is the Windows Ding
When I set the file all I get is the Windows Ding
When I use set any of the other default SimSig sounds I hear it

Only thing I can suggest is to attach the sound file that's not working to this thread and see if anyone else can spot the problem.

As the other sounds are working fine, I can only assume the format whatever text-to-speech software is creating is somehow different to whatever SimSig's expecting.

barriers.mp3 - The Floriston Barriers ARE down - This is my preferred file / voice
barriers.wav
The Floriston Barriers are down.wav

Why will these not add, as above?

An alternative, can someone create me one that works?

Downloaded and got the same as you.

Only difference I can see between the sounds that work and your sound is that yours is at 47kbps, the others are at 352kbps. Whether that makes a difference I don't know; see if your text-to-speech will output at a higher bit rate.

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

Your ".wav" files are in fact MP3 files, too.
You either need to save them as true WAVs right from the start, or use something like Audacity or some sort of audio format converter to turn them into actual WAVs.

The file extension claims that, but that is just a label which can be changed at will and therefore doesn't necessarily match up with the file's actual contents.
