I never really appreciated their inclusion or importance

I have now performed about ten tests, however on my latest test of the Carlisle platform (only) area for arrivals, what a difference it has made
I sat many years ago in my car next to signal CE336 / CE335 and wondered why they sat at red for so long, knowing the next train was already approaching before clearng

From what I understand, and if I remember correctly, these are used when you need to set a route (usually, I think, into a platform) but the overlap is not available, in which case the previous signal is approach controlled (i.e. as you noticed ["why they sat at red for so long"], it will be held at danger until the relevant track circuit has been occupied for a sufficient amount of time).

Full detail is provided on the wiki page here (under "From signal to yellow exit triangle (Warner)" )

In some cases it is not predictable when the overlap when restrict the next route to be set
As a result I have started using the triangles instead of the signals
It has made such a difference
Yes, some services are slowed but the difference as negligible as the line speed is 20mph beyond the signal
I had one passenger service that slowed to 18mph but was back to 20mph within 2 seconds (pointed out before the traction characteristics are not correct)

In the case of Carlisle there are some specific rules associated with warner routes and the sim will show a message (and subtract points) if you use them inappropriately. Have a look at the Panel B section on the Wiki.

Yes, made one mistake and learned from it

Aware of that, and avoided
Not had any issues, but I need to come back to that soon with a different question
