Hello, I'm a university student currently studying on an exchange in Oklahoma. After suffering from train withdrawal symptoms (!), a friend recommended SimSig, and I've become slightly addicted. I am therefore a complete newbie, and currently working my way through Exeter. Growing to hate level crossings! I wondered: how often do the more serious players amongst you use pause? Is it perceived as mild 'cheating'? Really enjoying the sim at the moment, so a big thank you to all involved. Disappointed, as a Stockton-on-Tees (of Stockton & Darlington Railway fame) lad, that there aren't any northern England sims (apart from Sheffield), but I see in the Wiki that there are a lot of northern areas that are off-limits. John, Welcome to our world!!! I believe 'serious players' have to halt the sim from time to time too; a specific time would be right at the beginning to sort out the seed trains (which is understandable) and where there is no ACI it can get frought too. Remember that most boxes simulated have more than one signalman so if you manage without pausing well done; otherwise - you're only human.... Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Hello Peter, I'm amazed at how quickly I got addicted to the sim - it somehow ignites a passion for timetabling and routing, which are seemingly irrational interests. I'm sure people on this forum can empathise with that! I don't feel naughty pausing at the moment, considering I've only just learned what a head code is (it was rather frustrating having nameless trains everywhere for a while), and as I don't have a brilliant knowledge of the Exeter area! Shame I couldn't consider the meet-up - inconvenient Atlantic Ocean - but I eagerly await the next location to be released. Log in to reply |

John, As i'm only a member of SimSig since December 2009, and I am now hosting I have picked up things quite quickly. The pause button allowed me to this as if you pause the game to do something you will notice that you get faster each time. The key is "Know what you need to do, and Know how to do it". Once you know what you are doing you wont even look for the pause button, You will automatically just do what you got to do. Alan Log in to reply |

Afro and all, You make this sound so easy but for those of us with the problem of rapidly failing brain cells (over 50's) it takes a bit longer. I must admit I have been playing with the Sims for a while now, however when I play the Kings Cross sim from the beginning of the timetable say 1977, as I am playing at the moment, things are OK through to about 06:00 in the morning just before the rush starts, but once I get up to about 25 plus trains on the board things really take a downward spiral and the pause button really does come in handy. Trying to achieve single handed what would normally take 4 to do is beyond me. Currently I would like to have a go at trying to deal with the hazards of a 'Track Circuit failure'. It's not that I have not set it up with the options key F3 to include this but up until now the Sim has decided to let things run a little bit easier and save the delights of trying to deal with TCF until the middle of the rush hour and then let me re think how easy this game is. For you boys who do it all the time it must be a bit easier when it happens but I would like to have just a small idea as to what happens. Can anyone recommend which Sim would be the best one to use remembering I am a one man team, who is head strong and eager to use something a bit bigger than Royston but would like to be weaned into the TCF scenario. Perhps for starters try Waterloo with ARS, that way you can concentrate on the TC failure and the rest will more-or-less take care of itself. If it becomes 'too easy' then you can turn a few more sub areas off. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |
