Signal Box Areas in Detail

Carmuirs East Junction

  • Clearing Points (Not applicable in EGIP mode)

  • Signal CEJ9 requires CEJ10 off or TC 4782 occupied
  • CEJ3 shows a Yellow aspect at best towards CEJ10.
  • CEJ15 also acts as Larbert Jn's distant signal, and will show Y unless Larbert Jn's signals are clear through to Larbert.
  • Despite how it's drawn on the simulation, the line to Stirling is the 'straight ahead' route. The route towards Cowlairs West Jn is approach released from red.
  • Carmuirs East Jn also controls Carmuirs West Jn in EGIP mode. In this era, CEJ6 is approach released from red unless GJ434 is off.

Carmuirs West Junction

  • Clearing Points (Not applicable in EGIP mode)

  • Signal CW20 requires signal GJ434 off or the berth TC (TC 7442) occupied in order to clear.
  • CW13 acts to provide a warning of the state of the signals at Larbert Jn. It will show Yellow if LJ25 is at Red, and Double Yellow if LJ24 is at red. When LJ24 is clear, CW13 will show Green.
  • Despite how it's drawn on the simulation, the line to Stirling is the 'straight ahead' route. A flashing yellow sequence is provided towards CEJ3.
  • This area is controlled by Carmuirs East Jn in EGIP mode.

Cowlairs - Workstation 1

Approach locking

The Approach Locking on most signals is non-comprehensive, i.e. the route will need to time out even if no train is approaching. For main signals, the timer is generally 60-120 seconds in the Queen Street area and 180 seconds everywhere else. Set routes in haste, and repent at leisure!

Glasgow Queen Street

All platforms are Permissive . Measuring track circuits and an overlength train alarm is provided- if you attempt to send a train into an occupied platform that doesn't have enough space to accommodate it, the 'Overlength train' text above the tunnel will turn white and the subsidiary aspect won't clear. Note that this isn't foolproof, and it won't prevent an overlength train from being signalled into an empty platform (most notably, platform 1).

In order to ensure the measuring test are correctly working it is not possible to seed trains into the platforms, you need to seed at CQ59 or CQ251 (or elsewhere) and run the train in as ECS. Hand of god removal of a train from any of the platforms will cause the calculation to fail too.

The overlaps of CQ59/CQ251 extend across the crossovers in Queen St station throat; this is due in part to the very steep gradient downhill through the tunnel towards Queen St.

TRTS is provided at Queen Street.

Eastfield TMD

A slot must be requested to send trains to lines 3, 4 and 5. No slot is required for lines 1 and 2.

Westerton

This is a single lead Jn which is simulated off-screen, exiting trains maybe delayed slightly if another train has entered the sim.

Anniesland

In Pre-EGIP modes, the route to Anniesland is set to the grey exit triangle, not the Fixed Distant signal between Kelvindale and Anniesland.

In EGIP mode, you must grant the Yoker signaller a slot to allow trains to approach from Hyndland. Note that it is possible to create a stand-off with a Hyndland-bound train approaching CE481.

Cowlairs - Workstation 2

Approach locking

The Approach Locking on most signals is non-comprehensive, i.e. the route will need to time out even if no train is approaching. For main signals, the timer is generally 180 seconds between Springburn and Cumbernauld, and 240 seconds on the E&G lines. Set routes in haste, and repent at leisure!

Springburn

Simple ARS is provided to work services between Bellgrove and Springburn platforms 3 and 4, on a first-come-first-serve basis. Note that platform numbers at Springburn must be specified in the timetable. ARS will not set any other routes in the area, or call-on routes into platforms 3 & 4.

Platforms 3 and 4 are permissive.

The via button may be used to force the route from CC324 to CC404 via the second crossover; the preferred route is via the first crossover.

St Rollox Works

A phone call must be made to St Rollox works before signalling a train into the sidings.

Gartcosh Ground Frame

The crossover points at Gartcosh must be normal in order to release the ground frame. Note that the siding is fully signalled in 'Old Cowlairs' mode.

Gartsherrie South Jn

This junction is fully simulated off-screen and some train regulation maybe observed.

You must grant a slot to the Motherwell signaller to allow a train to approach towards Gatcosh Jn.

Garnqueen North Junction

The 'straight ahead' route is towards Gartsherrie; a flashing yellow sequence is provided for the route to Gartcosh.

The DGL is permissive; use the exit arrow to set a call-on route into the loop.

Dunblane

  • Clearing Points

  • To represent Absolute Block working to Greenloaning, you must request a slot prior to sending a train towards that box. The slot should be requested just after the approaching train departs Stirling.
  • Greenloaning will request a slot to send a train towards you, approximately 3 minutes before the approaching train will pass Greenloaning. Note that the clearing point requires the crossover to be Normal.
  • With 'Mechanical Interlocking' enabled, a route cannot be set from DB54 to DB42 unless DB54's berth TC is occupied.
  • There is an Intermediate Block Section towards Stirling North (DB15); DB5 will clear provided routes are set and clear as far as DB15.
  • There is no exit signal from the Spur off platform 3 in reality (trains are verbally instructed by the signaller), however in the simulation a signal will appear at the spur exit if the siding is occupied.

Fouldubs Junction

  • A phone call must be placed to the BP Refinery before signalling a train towards it. It is not necessary to place a call for trains reversing behind FD29.
  • Routes involving signals FD4 and FD13 are set counter-sequentially. For example, to route from the Run-Round to FLT #1, set FD4-> FLT1, FD13->FD4, then FD37->FD13.
  • Trains can exit the simulation at the Run Round, provided they have a far-end stopping point set. Trains of up to 600m may remain in the simulation, if the stopping point is set to 'Near End'.

One Train Working

The lines to Grangemouth Docks and the BP Refinery are worked under One Train Working rules. These lines are indicated by a hollow "OCC" light which shows a solid white when a train is occupying the line. The occupying train will actually leave the sim and then re-enter when ready to return. While the train is 'off-sim' the OCC light will still be lit and routing of a second train is prohibited.

Note that it is impossible to use these lines for seeding purposes as a train must leave the sim before any train will enter, in other words the OCC light must be lit before a train may enter the sim.

It is possible to violate the one-train-working control by using the shunt exit triangles by Fauldubs Box instead of the main signal to release trains to the two locations when the main route is blocked, if you do then you will incur a warning and a penalty- also you will only ever get one train back again due to the sim control logic.

Grangemouth Jn

  • Signal GH9 is fixed at red, and only trains reversing behind GH10 should be routed towards it.
  • TRTS is provided at GH10 and GH12, primarily used for reversing trains.

Greenhill Jn

  • From Carmuirs West Jn, the higher-speed route is towards Greenhill Upper Junction; the route towards Cumbernauld is approach released from red.
  • A flashing yellow sequence is provided for the route from GJ336 to GJ419.
  • It is not permitted to set a route from shunt signal GJ344 to GJ419 if GJ419 Overlap is occupied or points within are reverse.

Larbert Jn

  • Clearing Points (Not applicable in EGIP mode)

  • Note that at Larbert Junction you will incur a clearing point penalty when you signal a train from signal LN45 to signal LJ5 if there is a train at signal LJ12 and the points LJ8 are reverse. To avoid this you must manually normalise point LJ8 before setting the route from signal LN45.
  • LJ5 carries outer distants for Carmuirs West Jn and Carmuirs East Jn.
  • LJ25 carries an outer distant for Larbert North. An outer distant is not required on LJ14 due to the lower line speed.
  • The junction is controlled by Larbert North in EGIP mode.

Larbert North

  • Clearing Points (Not applicable in EGIP mode)

  • You must set the points at end of Larbert DGL to select the correct loop before routing a train into or out of the loop. At the north end, trains will only move if LN55 is clear if the point is set to the correct loop.
  • A signal will appear if a train is routed into the headshunt at the north end of the DPL; this allows the point to select which loop is used to be changed. In reality, these moves were handled verbally between the driver and signaller.
  • LN45 carries a split distant for Larbert Jn; which distant clears depends on which route is set at Larbert Jn.
  • In EGIP mode, Larbert North controls Larbert Jn. It also controls the line north to Stirling Middle, with the crossovers and branch removed at Plean Jn.
  • In EGIP mode, passenger trains can return towards Carmuirs West Jn from the Down platform at Larbert using LN15.
  • In EGIP mode, a flashing yellow sequence is provided towards Carmuirs East Junction.

Plean Jn

  • Clearing Points

  • Signal PJ18 has a 30 second approach lock if the section between PJ19 and LN46 is not clear. It is understood that the reason behind this is to approach control trains bound for Caberboard and a line clear from Larbert North was not required.
  • There is an Intermediate Block Section towards Stirling Middle; PJ24 will clear provided PJ22 is clear towards PJ21.
  • All pointwork is removed and the area controlled by Larbert North in post-EGIP mode.

Polmont

  • Signal P504 is approach control from Red when the Junction signal P508 is ON
  • UPL (N) has a 5mph speed limit throughout.
  • Trains booked to stop at Falkirk Grahamston will stop at Falkirk High instead. See

    Diverting Trains .

  • Location Linlithgow UPL is provided for train regulation purposes, any train booked there will leave the Sim at that point.

Stirling Middle

The south end of Stirling station is controlled by a lever frame. The Kincardine (Alloa) line is controlled by a panel.

Stirling Station South End (Duty S1)- Pre EGIP

  • Clearing Points

  • Platforms 2, 6, 7, 8 and 10 are permissive in the Down direction.
  • Signal SM82 route to SM79 has a 30 second approach control if platform 2 is occupied.
  • Signal SM82 route to SM47 has a 30 second approach control if platform 6 is occupied, otherwise it needs just the berth TC to be occupied.
  • There are no routes from the Down Perth to platforms 7 and 8; access to these platforms is by reversal at one of the shunt signals. Trains may depart platforms 7 & 8 in passenger service.
  • The distant beneath SM47 is fixed in Post-SAK mode.
  • The signals at the south end of platforms 6, 7 and 8 are drawn as they were arranged in real life; that is, bracketed from a single post. SM54 applies to platform 7, SM52 applies to platform 8. SM65 applies to platform 6, and comprises both the main arm, and the disc (which is mounted in the 'six foot' between the P6 and P9 lines), which is used for the route to SM34.

  • SM34 is a set of shunt signals, and passenger trains should not be routed via this signal.
  • SM17 and SM38 have shunt arms to read to SM34.
  • Shunt routes involving SM36 and SM57 are set counter-sequntially; that is, those signals must have a route set from them before a route can be set to them.
  • No route is available from SM57 to Platform 3.
  • Stirling South SM77(rev) is also the location for SM36 reverse.

Stirling Station South End (Duty S1)- EGIP

  • Platforms 7 and 8 are now available for passenger arrivals from Larbert.
  • SM87 acts as Stirling North's distant; with a route to Stirling platform 3, it will only show Green with SN36 and SN37 clear.
  • Platforms at Stirling are permissive from shunt signals only.
  • There is no route from SM61 to Platform 3.

Kincardine Lines (Duty S2)

  • In use only in Post SAK and EGIP modes.
  • Controls the North end of Stirling Platforms 6 & 9 onwards towards Longannet.
  • SK6534 and SK6533, at Cambus and Alloa loops respectively, are Approach Lit
  • Note that it is possible to cause a stand-off at Alloa station if you allow a train to Longannet out of Cambus loop with a train stood at SK6546, or if you allow a train to Alloa Town out of the loop with another train stood at Alloa Town (unless the two are booked to join).
  • Platform 6 is fully bi-directional.

Longannet Signal Box

At Longannet, there are sidings at Longannet Power Station, and the main line continues through to Charlestown Junction, which is included on the Edinburgh simulation. Longannet box is not included on either simulation.

There is no passing loop at Longannet, however trains can access the power station from both Stirling and Charlestown.

You must place a phone call to Longannet box to request permission for a train to both Longannet or Charlestown. Note that as there is no passing loop at Longannet, it is possible to gridlock the simulation at Longannet if you don't call ahead and signal a train to Charlestown while another train is heading towards you between Charlestown and Longannet.

Particular care should be taken when this simulation is chained to Edinburgh.

Stirling North

  • Clearing Points

  • There is an Intermediate Block Section (SN38) towards Dunblane; the distant under SM79 will clear provided SN36 and SN37 are clear.
  • SN47 also acts as Stirling Middle's distant.
  • To work platform 4 and 5 trains can be routed in as normal route setting to the buffer arrows. To allow a train to exit you must first ensure the point at Signal SN31 is in the correct position, changing manually if necessary, then set the route from SN31.
  • Platforms 4 and 5 may not be used by passenger trains.
  • Platforms 4 and 5 can only be accessed from SN46.
  • Platform 6 can only be accessed from the Up Perth in Pre-SAK & Old Cowlairs modes.
  • In Post-SAK and EGIP modes, Stirling North does not control the north end of platforms 6 and 9.
