Overview

This sim covers the area of the former Barry, Aberthaw and Cowbridge Road signalboxes which controlled the "Vale of Glamorgan" line between Cogan Junction and Bridgend.

You take control just past Cogan Junction; where this simulation fringes to Cardiff, through Eastbrook, Dinas Powys and Cadoxton, where access to the Dock Lines is available, through Barry Docks (Station) before reaching Barry and its junction. Here the line to Barry Island diverges. The mainline continues through Rhoose, and past Aberthaw with it's various freight locations. Llantwit Major is then reached, then Cowbridge Road and the access to Ford Sidings before we hand over to Port Talbot Panel, just outside Bridgend.

Use Of Welsh Language

During the creation of the Wales & Borders series the use of the Welsh language has been a source of much fun and enjoyment. I have tried to use the English version of place names throughout the simulation, sometimes due to the fact I speak the Welsh language, and have lived in Wales most of my life a Welsh version of a place names "slips through the net" especially in cases where it is hard for the testing team to spot the difference (eg English - Treforest / Welsh - Trefforest). A list of Welsh equivalent names is provided in the Reference Section.

Features

Options

Train Operated Route Release (TORR)

TORR is provided, however for realistic play this option should be disabled.

Scale of Problems

Choose the scale of train delays and infrastructure failures. The normal SimSig options of “None”, “Low”, “Medium” and “High” are available. Select which one you wish to play from the drop-down menu.

Absolute Block

The section between Barry and Aberthaw is worked under the Absolute Block regulations. The method of operation is identical to that of the other Wales & Boarders simulations, and is explained in detail in theAbsolute Block manual . Unticking the box on start-up disables the AB working, and routes are set in the same way as the rest of the simulation.

Interlocking Boundaries

Where a workstation has multiple interlockings within its control a button labelled "INT" on an orange background is available to turn the interlocking boundary markers on (white text) or off (black text). The interlocking boundaries are shown in red and will assist you in locating a failure should it occur.

Workstation Overview

Barry

Operational notes:

  • The Dock Lines can only be accessed from the Down Main via the Down Reception Sidings. There is no route from B39 direct.
  • The Dock Lines can be accessed from B6 on the Up Main.
  • B10 to the Down Reception line is slotted by the Down Reception Ground Frame.
  • B60 has main and warner class routes to B59.
  • B60 has a wrong road route to B32.
  • B48 and B49 are locked by the Barry - Aberthaw Block Instrument.
  • The absolute block section between Barry and Aberthaw extends to AW2.
  • B64 has not got a warner class route to B59.
  • Trains signalled up to UB5 which will reverse at B6 signal should be specifically described as "0Z10".
  • You will receive a phone call for trains entering at the Dock Lines, and the Up Through Sidings (Cambrian Transport).
  • A courtesy call is required to Cambrian Transport for trains arriving onto the Up Through Sidings.

Aberthaw

Operational notes:

  • AW100 and AW101 protect Rhoose Level Crossing. These are not intermediate block signals.
  • The block section between Aberthaw and Barry extends as far as B64.
  • AW47 is locked by the Aberthaw - Barry Block Instrument.
  • AW222 is slotted by Cowbridge Road. This slot is not persistent.
  • AW229 is a slot on CR2. This slot is persistent.
  • You will receive a phone call for trains entering at Aberthaw Power Station, and Aberthaw CE works.
  • In order to clear AW32, AW40 needs to be off, or Aberthaw GF released.
  • In order to clear AW20, AW24 needs to be off.
  • The timetable location for Aberthaw Coal Sidings is shared with Aberthaw CE works.
  • A

Signal Group Replacement Control is provided for Aberthaw SSI interlocking.

Cowbridge Road

Operational notes:

  • CR5 is a slot on AW222. This slot is not persistent.
  • CR2 is slotted by Aberthaw. This slot is persistent.
  • Ford Siding GF Key A controls the crossover.
  • Ford Siding GF Key C controls the siding access.
  • CR3 is slotted by Port Talbot Westcad at aspect level, the route can be set without the slot.
  • You should understand that a train described to you as 0Z10 from Port Talbot will not proceed towards your signalbox.
  • You will receive a phone call for trains entering at Ford Sidings.

Level Crossings

There are several different types of level crossings on the sim.

Crossing Type Located Between Workstation
Rhoose CCTV Rhoose platforms Aberthaw
Church Farm UWC Aberthaw and Llantwit Major Aberthaw
Llanlow UWC Llantwit Major and Cowbridge Road Aberthaw
Farmers UWC Llantwit Major and Cowbridge Road Aberthaw

Multiplayer and Chaining

This simulation is ideally suited to one player, either playing standalone, or chained into one of the adjacent simulations.

Vale Of Glamorgan chains to Cardiff (Cogan Junction) and Port Talbot (Bridgend).

Concessions

  • PT3451 slot does not currently function exactly as in real life. This will be improved in a future version once changes are made for chaining compatibility with Port Talbot.
