West Panel

Panel Description

This Panel covers the main line from south of Derby as far as Tamworth High Level, with several branch lines:

  • from Stenson Jn, the Chellaston Line via Sheet Stores Junction to Trent.
  • from North Stafford Junction towards Stoke.
  • from Burton-on-Trent, the Goods Line via Moira West to Leicester.
  • from Wichnor Junction via Lichfield High Level towards Birmingham.

Just north of Wichnor Jn lies Barton Central Rivers Depot. Operated by Bombardier/Arriva Cross Country, the depot is the home of the Class 220/221 'Voyagers'.

Burton-on-Trent is the main station on the panel, with most, but not all, trains stopping there. There are also goods only lines in both directions, and a Down Goods Loop at Elford (permissive working, with queue TD berths).

Kingsbury Shunt Frame

Kingsbury Shunt Frame is off-sim in Saltley's control area but Derby must not send a train for there until they are ready to take it. Place a telephone call to Kingsbury in plenty of time before the train has reached Wichnor Junction so that you have time to decide what to do with it. If Kingsbury is ready then allow the train to run through, if not put the train into the loop at Elford until Kingsbury can accept it.

Elford

The loop at Elford may only be used by freight services, and is permissive . Note that the ground frame is only required for trains using the Up/Down Main crossover, and not Down trains using the loop.

The frame can only be released when no route is set from signal 6. Both Goods and Main releases must be given (and levers 1 and 2 pulled) before signals 6, 7 and 8 can be cleared. Lever 3 is a facing point lock, and must be moved reverse before lever 4 can be moved.

Alrewas

Alrewas requires a slot to send a train, which is given by setting a route from signal SAS5 (which is grey) to signal 78.

Any train booked to reverse behind signal 78 should be signalled towards Alrewas using the white shunt arrow.

Barton Central Rivers Depot

A phone call must be placed to Barton Central Rivers depot for arriving trains (either North or South end).

To set a route into the south end for trains arriving at signal 81 (adjacent to Wichnor Jn), set the route from signal 81 to signal BD1 and wait a short time. After a short interval the remaining route into Central Rivers Depot from the south will be set automatically and your train will proceed into the depot, requiring no further input from you.

The depot requires a slot to send trains towards Wichnor Jn. This can be granted by setting a route from BD2 or BD4 (as appropriate) to signal 52.

Branston

The frame can only be released when no route is set from signals 96, 98 and 102. The shunt signal on the line from Birmingham Curve junction is normally unlit (shown as grey), and displays a fixed red aspect when the frame is released. Trains entering the siding require a route to be set from DY97 to the grey exit arrow directly above the siding point, which can be done when the points are moved and lever 1 is reversed.

Burton-on-Trent

The Goods Lines here are permissive ; at automatic signals, the subsidiary will light automatically if the section ahead is occupied. Please note that they have a 15mph speed limit throughout.

It is possible to exclude the opposite locking on DY169 and DY170, to allow trains to shunt in/out of Wetmore sidings multiple times without the route having to be constantly re-set. To remove the locking, set a route from DY169 to the shunt arrow next to DY181, and set a route from DY170 to Wetmore Sidings. Right click the '169/170 locking release' button, and both signals will clear.

Trains bound for Mosley Street siding must approach from the Wetmore Jn direction- the frame cannot be released if they are routed from signal 141 to the LOS.

A route may be set from Signal 170 along the Up Goods towards Burton, using the white arrow to the left of 171, provided a train is occupying the section between 157 and 171.

North Staffordshire Jn

Signal 303 is approach released from red if 305 is at red; this extends the time required for a train towards Sheet Stores Jn to clear the main lines.

Egginton AHB

You have an emergency replacement switch on EN10 to hold that signal at danger should you need to protect Egginton AHB for a crossing user. Alternatively, you can place a call to Egginton signal box to block the Up line.

Sunnyhill Goods Loop

The Down Goods is permissive.

Track Circuit overrides

Track Circuit Overrides are provided for the section of line between DY170 and DY172, and between DY300 and DY304.

Swadlincote

The frame can only be released when no route is set from signal 125. There are separate releases for the siding and the crossover; moves between the Up Goods and the siding to not require the crossover (U/D) release. Lever 5 is a facing point lock, and must be reversed before the points 6 are moved. You must then re-lock the points (move Lever 5 normal) before any signal can be cleared. It is not possible to signal a train from the Down Goods to the siding or Up goods, or from the Up Goods to the Down Goods (unless the move starts from the siding). However, a train can be signalled from the siding towards the LOS on the Up Goods.
